Abstract
Overview - EN ISO 19115-2:2019/A1:2022 (Metadata for acquisition & processing)
EN ISO 19115-2:2019/A1:2022 is the CEN-endorsed amendment to ISO 19115-2:2019. It defines metadata extensions specifically for the acquisition and processing phases of geographic information (GI) - e.g., instruments, platforms, sensors, processing steps and events. The amendment updates tables and code lists and provides XML schema guidance for consistent encoding and interchange of acquisition- and processing-related metadata.
Keywords: EN ISO 19115-2:2019/A1:2022, metadata, geographic information, acquisition and processing, ISO 19115-2, XML schema, codelists.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Extensions for acquisition and processing: Adds and clarifies metadata structures for describing measuring instruments (MI_Instrument), sensors (MI_Sensor), platforms (MI_Platform) and processing information (LE_Processing / LE_ProcessStep).
- Instrument and platform identification: Standardized fields (citation, identifier, type, description, sponsor, associations) and role associations (e.g., instrument mountedOn platform, sensor hosted on instrument).
- Processing metadata: Fields for processing package identifier, software references, procedure descriptions, runtime parameters, documentation, algorithms and process parameters.
- Event type codelist: Introduces MI_EventTypeCode values for platform/instrument/sensor events (e.g., calibration, dataLoss, manoeuvre, switchOn/switchOff).
- XML Schema implementation: Amendment replaces Annex C with explicit guidance, namespace mappings and references to downloadable XML schemas (schemas.isotc211.org/19115/). It integrates with ISO/TS 19115-3 schemas and uses ISO 19157 “dqc” namespace for quality concepts.
- Codelists and resources: Provides organized resources (Codelists, namespace information, transforms) and machine-readable codelists for consistent use.
Applications and who uses it
- GIS data managers and metadata custodians documenting sensor-based datasets (satellite imagery, airborne LiDAR, in‑situ sensors).
- Remote sensing and surveying teams describing instrument/platform characteristics and processing workflows.
- Software developers and integrators creating metadata editors, catalog services, ingestion pipelines and metadata validation tools.
- Data catalogues, national mapping agencies, research projects and organizations requiring interoperability and provenance tracking for derived datasets.
Benefits: improved interoperability, consistent provenance, easier discovery and automated processing of GI datasets.
