Overview
EN ISO 19879:2021 - "Metallic tube connections for fluid power and general use - Test methods for hydraulic fluid power connections" - is the CEN-adopted version of ISO 19879:2021. It specifies uniform, standalone test methods and procedures for evaluating the performance of metallic tube connections, stud ends for ports and flange connections used in hydraulic fluid power systems. Tests are independent and the applicable tests and performance criteria are indicated in the relevant component International Standard. Quick-action (quick‑release) couplings are excluded (see ISO 18869).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Applies to metallic tube connections, stud ends and flanges for hydraulic fluid power; excludes hydraulic quick-action couplings.
- Test independence: Each test is described as an independent method - the appropriate component standard determines which tests are required for qualification.
- Minimum sample requirements: Qualification is performed using the minimum number of samples specified in this document unless the relevant connector standard or the manufacturer and user agree otherwise.
- General test provisions:
- Test assemblies and test equipment (including test blocks and test seals)
- Procedure controls such as thread lubrication, torque, temperature
- Test report requirements and typical data recording (informative annex with sample form)
- Standardized test methods (documented principles and procedures):
- Repeated assembly test
- Leakage test
- Proof test
- Burst test
- Cyclic endurance test
- Vacuum test
- Overtightening test
- Vibration test
- Cyclic endurance (impulse) combined with vibration
Practical applications
- Product qualification and type testing for metallic hydraulic fittings, flanges and stud ends.
- Quality control and production testing in manufacturing plants to verify assembly and sealing performance under specified conditions.
- Independent testing laboratories use these methods to produce repeatable, comparable results for customers and regulatory bodies.
- Design and R&D teams apply the tests during development to validate durability, leak tightness and mechanical strength.
- Purchasers, specifiers, and OEMs reference this standard in procurement and system specifications to ensure connector compatibility with hydraulic system requirements.
Who should use it
- Manufacturers of metallic tube connections, fittings and flanges
- Test houses and certification bodies
- Hydraulic system designers and OEM engineers
- Quality assurance and compliance teams
- Procurement specialists specifying hydraulic connectors
