Overview
EN ISO 3016:2019 (ISO 3016:2019) - published by CEN/ISO - specifies a standardized laboratory method for the determination of pour point of petroleum and related products from natural or synthetic sources. The pour point is the lowest temperature at which a petroleum sample will continue to flow under specified conditions. The standard includes a separate procedure for determining the lower pour point of fuel oils, heavy lubricant base stocks and products containing residual fuel components. It is explicitly not suitable for crude oils. Note: automated instruments exist but their precision has not been established in this edition.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to refined petroleum products and related synthetic products; excludes crude oils. Covers routine pour point testing and a lower-pour-point procedure for heavy/residual products.
- Test principle: After preliminary heating, samples are cooled at a prescribed rate and examined at 3 °C intervals for flow; the lowest temperature showing movement is recorded as the pour point.
- Apparatus and measurement:
- Specified test jar dimensions and fill level (glass cylindrical jar, nominal 45 ml content).
- Temperature measuring devices: digital contact thermometers (DCT) meeting Annex A or liquid-in-glass partial-immersion thermometers (checked to ±1 °C).
- Cooling baths, jackets, gaskets, and timing device specifications are provided to ensure repeatable conditions.
- Sampling and references: Sampling guidance refers to ISO 3170/ISO 3171 (manual and automatic sampling). Other normative references include ASTM practices for thermometer and immersion checks.
- Precision and reporting: Clause 9 aligns precision statements with ASTM D97; Annex C gives derived precision values. The test report content and safety warnings are specified.
Applications
- Quality control and specification testing for diesel, heating fuels, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and fuel oils.
- Product development and formulation adjustments for pour point depressants and cold-flow performance.
- Regulatory, commercial and contractual testing where pour point is a required property in product specifications.
- End users: petroleum laboratories, refinery QC/analytical teams, lubricant manufacturers, fuel distributors, petrochemical testing labs, and standards or compliance officers.
