EN ISO 4136:2022 - “Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials - Transverse tensile test (ISO 4136:2022)” is a CEN-adopted International Standard that specifies specimen sizes and the procedure for carrying out transverse tensile tests on welded butt joints. The test determines the tensile strength of the joint and the location of fracture in metallic materials in any product form. This fourth edition (2022) replaces EN ISO 4136:2012 and aligns with ISO testing practice and European implementation requirements.

Specimen location and marking:

Specimen is taken transverse to the weld with the weld axis centered along the parallel length.
Each test piece and specimen must be clearly marked to identify origin and working direction where relevant.
For small-diameter pipes (D ≤ 50 mm, unless otherwise specified), testing may be performed on the whole pipe.

Preparation, extraction and machining:

Extraction methods must not alter specimen properties. For steel, shearing is excluded for thicknesses > 8 mm; thermal cutting must be ≥ 8 mm from the final parallel length surfaces.
For other metallic materials, shearing and thermal cutting are excluded; machining or non-thermal cutting methods are required.
Surface preparation and exact specimen dimensions follow the standard’s figures and Table 1 symbols (e.g., b, L, S, t).

Post-test examination and reporting:

Record tensile strength, fracture location, and examine fracture surfaces.
Include specimen details, heat treatment/ageing history (if any), testing temperature, and methods used in the test report.
