Overview
EN ISO 9626:2016 (ISO 9626:2016) specifies requirements and test methods for rigid stainless steel needle tubing used in the manufacture of hypodermic needles and other medical devices for human use. The standard covers dimensional limits, material selection, surface condition, mechanical properties and laboratory test methods for tubing in designated metric sizes from 3.4 mm (10 gauge) down to 0.18 mm (34 gauge). Flexible stainless steel tubing is excluded from the mechanical requirements, but its dimensional recommendations may be adopted voluntarily.
Key Topics
- Scope & materials
- Applies to rigid needle tubing intended as components of medical devices.
- Tubing shall be made from stainless steels listed in ISO 15510; material choice must account for intended use and biocompatibility (see ISO 10993-1).
- Dimensions & size designation
- Tubing is designated by nominal outer diameter (mm), corresponding gauge and a wall-thickness class: RW (Regular Wall), TW (Thin Wall), ETW (Extra Thin Wall), UTW (Ultra Thin Wall).
- The standard provides dimensional limits (outer/inner diameters) for each designated size.
- Surface finish, straightness & cleanliness
- Surfaces must be smooth, free of visible defects, metal soil and processing agents; manufacturers may specify tighter finishes for device-specific needs.
- Chemical extractables
- pH of an extract prepared per the standard (Annex A) must be within one pH unit of the control fluid.
- Mechanical properties & tests
- Requirements and test methods for stiffness, resistance to breakage, and resistance to corrosion are defined (Annexes B–D).
- Sampling rules and test specimen preparation are included.
- Annexes
- Normative annexes cover extract preparation (A), stiffness test (B), breakage test (C), corrosion test (D); informative rationale is provided in Annex E.
Applications
- Intended users:
- Needle tubing manufacturers producing components for syringes, injection systems and catheters.
- Medical device OEMs specifying tubing for hypodermic needles, infusion sets and other invasive devices.
- Quality, regulatory and procurement teams who need objective acceptance criteria and test procedures.
- Test laboratories performing mechanical and corrosion testing on tubing lots.
- Practical value:
- Ensures consistent tube geometry for needle performance (flow, penetration, safety).
- Provides objective tests for batch release, supplier qualification and regulatory documentation.
- Helps reduce risks in device assembly and in-service performance by defining material, cleanliness and mechanical limits.
