This document specifies minimum requirements and weathering for coating systems for wind-turbine rotor blades.
Abstract
Overview
CEN ISO/TS 19392-1:2022 (identical to ISO/TS 19392-1:2018) defines minimum requirements and weathering tests for coating systems applied to wind-turbine rotor blades. It is a technical specification adopted by CEN for provisional use in Europe. The document specifies sampling, specimen preparation and a set of initial and post-weathering performance criteria to help ensure coatings protect glass-fibre reinforced polymer substrates from environmental damage such as rain, hail and UV exposure.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Minimum performance and weathering requirements for rotor-blade coating systems.
- Sampling & preparation: Sampling per ISO 15528; sample preparation per ISO 1513. Substrate choice is to be agreed between parties.
- Initial performance (selected):
- Adhesive strength: > 5 MPa (cohesive fracture only) or > 7 MPa (adhesion or cohesion fracture) - test: ISO 4624.
- Gloss (initial): < 30 GU (60° geometry) - test: ISO 2813 (method to be agreed by parties).
- Rain erosion resistance: assessed using either ISO/TS 19392-2 (rotating-arm rain simulation) or ISO/TS 19392-3 (water-jet method).
- After artificial weathering (selected):
- Adhesive strength: still > 5 MPa (cohesive fracture) or > 7 MPa.
- Colour change: ΔE*
