This document encompasses the determination of the fatty acid profile in algae and algae products, thereby including micro- and macroalgae, according to the definitions adopted by CEN. This determination enables that all fatty acids present at a significant level (> 1 % of the total fatty acids) in the algal matrix are quantified in an accurate and reproducible way. The concentration of each fatty acid will be available in relative (in %) and, by means of an appropriate internal standard, absolute (mg/g dw) terms. Moreover, the method described in this standard ensures a practical and safe technical approach, whose protocol details and all related know-how will be easily and economically transferrable to all the sector stakeholders. This document ensures this objective by a comprehensive and fully detailed description of all technical steps from the sample itself (including its state and form) to the gas chromatographic technique and the calculation of the fatty acid content. The wording avoids any risk of ambiguity or wrong interpretation. Finally, this methodological standard will be informed by other equivalent standards applied to other matrices and will take into account other standards concerning specific treatment or extractive procedure of the sample prior to the fatty acid analysis itself.
Abstract
Overview
EN 18210:2026 is a CEN (European Committee for Standardization) standard that specifies the determination of the fatty acid composition in algae and algae products. This comprehensive document covers both microalgae and macroalgae, applying to a broad range of algae-based materials and products according to CEN definitions. The standard enables accurate quantification of all significant fatty acids (above 1% of total fatty acids) within the algal matrix. Using both relative (%) and absolute (mg/g dry weight) concentrations, EN 18210:2026 ensures sector-wide comparability and reproducibility in fatty acid analysis for the growing algae industry.
Key Topics
- Fatty Acid Profile Determination: The standard details two validated technical approaches-direct and indirect transesterification-for producing fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) from algal samples, which are then analyzed by gas chromatography.
- Sample Preparation and Handling: Guidance is provided on proper sampling techniques, storage, and sample preparation to maintain integrity, referencing EN 17605 for sample treatment.
- Reproducibility and Accuracy: Robust quality control measures and clear calculation methods based on internal standards ensure both accuracy and reproducibility across laboratories and sample matrices.
- Reporting Requirements: The document mandates standardized reporting in both relative and absolute terms, including details of the analytical process and results.
- Transferability of Methodology: Designed for practical use, the protocol is explicitly detailed to facilitate easy adoption across the sector, supporting economic and technical scalability.
Applications
EN 18210:2026 is vital for stakeholders in diverse sectors where the nutritional and functional properties of algal products are crucial:
- Food and Feed Industry: Supports quality control and regulatory compliance by enabling precise profiling of valuable omega-3 and other bioactive fatty acids in edible algae products, supplements, and feed ingredients.
- Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals: Offers analytical confidence for manufacturers formulating products that exploit the beneficial fatty acid content of algae, such as skincare actives or health supplements.
- Biofuel Production: Facilitates feedstock evaluation for biodiesel production by enabling detailed analysis of algal lipid content and composition.
- Bioplastics and Biopolymers: Helps in characterizing algal materials used in sustainable polymer development.
- Agriculture and Horticulture: Assists in the analysis of algae-based fertilizers and biostimulants, confirming consistency and efficacy of fatty acid-rich inputs.
Related Standards
Adoption and implementation of EN 18210:2026 is supported by several related standards that guide terminology, sampling, and analysis in the algae sector:
- EN 17399: Algae and algae products – Terms and definitions. Provides the terminology underpinning standardized communication in the field.
- EN 17605:2022: Algae and algae products – Methods of sampling and analysis – Sample treatment. Offers comprehensive instructions on proper sample preparation and treatment.
- EN 17908: Algae and algae products - Methods of sampling and analysis - Determination of total lipid content using the Ryckebosch-Foubert method. Details oil extraction procedures as referenced in the indirect approach of EN 18210.
- Other Analytical Standards: The protocol aligns with methodologies used for other biological matrices, facilitating harmonization across laboratories and sectors.
EN 18210:2026 sets the benchmark for the determination of fatty acid composition in algae, supporting robust quality assurance and the commercialization of high-value algae-based products across Europe and beyond. This standard is essential for advancing quality, safety, and innovation in the rapidly expanding algae industry.
