A specimen of the textile (textiles of all kinds and in all forms) in contact with specified adjacent fabrics is rolled into a cylinder and placed in the neck of a flask containing boiling water. The staining of the adjacent fabrics is assessed with the grey scale.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 105-E11:1996 is an international standard established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies a test method for evaluating the colour fastness to steaming of textiles. This standard applies to textiles of all kinds and forms, assessing their resistance to colour change or staining when exposed to steam under atmospheric pressure. The test involves placing a rolled specimen of the textile in contact with specified adjacent fabrics and exposing it to steam generated from boiling water. The staining effect on the adjacent fabrics is then evaluated using a grey scale.
This standard is critical for manufacturers, quality assurance teams, and textile researchers to ensure that textiles maintain their colour integrity when subjected to steaming processes common in textile manufacturing and treatment.
Key Topics
-
Test Scope The test covers textiles in any form, including fabric, yarn (knitted into fabric), and loose fibres (formed into sheets). It evaluates the colour fastness specifically to steam exposure under atmospheric pressure.
-
Specimen Preparation The textile specimen is combined with standard adjacent fabrics as a composite, then rolled into a cylinder approximately 40 mm x 100 mm in size. The specimen is positioned so that the material being tested is near the centre.
-
Testing Apparatus
- Glass tube with a 30 mm inside diameter, open at both ends, mounted into a cork stopper fitted into the neck of a 2-litre conical flask.
- The flask contains about 0.5 litres of boiling water with some beads to promote even steam distribution.
- The composite specimen is inserted into the tube, held in place by circumferential protuberances.
-
Test Procedure The specimen is steamed for 30 minutes in the flask neck above boiling water. After steaming, the fabrics are separated and dried at temperatures not exceeding 60 °C. The stained adjacent fabrics are assessed against a grey scale to determine staining levels.
-
Evaluation Method Staining of adjacent fabrics on contact with the textile is visually compared to the grey scale as defined by ISO 105-A03. This provides a quantifiable rating indicating the degree of colour transfer.
-
Reporting Requirements Reports must document the standard used (ISO 105-E11:1994), specimen identification details, and the numerical grey scale rating of any staining observed.
Applications
-
Quality Control in Textile Production EN ISO 105-E11 is vital for manufacturers to ensure their products withstand steaming during dye fixation, laundry, or finishing processes without undesirable colour transfer.
-
Textile Research and Development The standard helps R&D departments develop textile materials and dyes with improved resistance to steaming, enhancing product durability and customer satisfaction.
-
Compliance and Certification Meeting this standard supports compliance with global textile quality benchmarks, facilitating market acceptance and certification of textile products.
-
Laundry and Care Label Development Understanding textile colour fastness to steaming assists in designing appropriate care instructions for consumers to maintain product quality.
