Describes a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles in all forms to manufacturing operation designed to remove vegetable impurities by treatment with the cited chemical at high temperatures. The method is mainly applicable to wool and textiles containing wool, particularly those containing also acetate or polyamide fibres. The treated specimen is dried, baked, rinsed and neutralized. The changes in colour after rinsing, neutralizing and drying are assessed with the grey scale.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 105-X02:1995 specifies a standardized method to test the colour fastness of textiles-primarily wool and wool blends-against carbonizing treatment with sulfuric acid. This treatment simulates manufacturing processes aimed at removing vegetable impurities at high temperatures. The method evaluates how well textile dyes resist colour changes caused by exposure to sulfuric acid followed by drying, baking, rinsing, and neutralizing. Changes in colour are assessed using the ISO grey scale, ensuring consistent and reliable results.
This standard is essential for textile manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and textile chemists to verify the durability of textile colours during processing that involves harsh chemical conditions.
Key Topics
- Scope: Focused on wool and wool-containing textiles, including those blended with acetate or polyamide fibres, subjected to sulfuric acid carbonizing.
- Test Procedure:
- Immersion of specimens in sulfuric acid solution (50 g concentrated acid per litre) at room temperature for 15 minutes.
- Drying at 60 °C, baking at 105 °C, and subsequent rinsing and neutralization steps.
- Colour changes assessed with ISO 105-A02 grey scale post-treatment.
- Test Materials:
- Wool-rich textiles, including fabric, yarn (knitted into fabric), or loose fibres.
- Standard sodium carbonate solution for neutralization.
- Apparatus:
- Controlled drying oven.
- Precise acid and neutralizing solutions.
- Grey scale for colour change assessment.
- Control Test: Use of a standard dyeing (Cl Mordant Red 3) treated with potassium dichromate as a quality control step.
- Assessment: Visual comparison against grey scale ratings; test validity confirmed if control specimen meets specific rating thresholds.
Applications
- Quality Control in Wool Processing: Ensures the colour stability of wool textiles during carbonizing treatments, which are critical to removing natural impurities without compromising dye integrity.
- Textile Manufacturing: Helps manufacturers verify fibre blends’ resistance to harsh acidic treatments used in refining and finishing processes.
- Product Development: Supports R&D in developing dyes and finishing agents with improved resistance to chemical treatments.
- Certification & Compliance: Provides documented, internationally recognized test results to meet industry standards and customer requirements.
- Lab Testing: Widely applied in textile testing laboratories for certification of textile dye fastness properties.
