Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 10821:2005/A1:2009 is Amendment 1 (corrected version 2009-08-01) to the international standard on industrial sewing machines - safety requirements for sewing machines, units and systems. Adopted by CEN in March 2009, this amendment updates normative references, clarifies terms, adjusts acoustic acceptance levels, and refines safety and marking requirements. The amendment supports conformity with the EU Machinery Directives (98/37/EC and 2006/42/EC) and was to be implemented by CEN members during 2009.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Safety-related control performance: Specifies minimum performance levels per ISO 13849-1:2006 - machines where hazards originate mainly from stitch-form elements require at least Performance Level (PL) b, while other industrial sewing machines require PL c.
- Acoustics / noise limits: Several clauses, examples and figures in the standard have been revised to use 80 dB (replacing prior 85 dB) for specific A-weighted sound pressure/power acceptance criteria and worked examples.
- Normative references updated: Replaces or clarifies references to key standards such as ISO 3747:2000, ISO 13849-1:2006, IEC 60204-1:2005, and IEC 60825-1:2007.
- Terms & definitions: Incorporates terminology from ISO 3744, ISO 4915/4916, ISO 11204, ISO 12100-1 and ISO/IEC Guide 51.
- Machine marking and documentation: Sewing units and systems must be marked legibly and indelibly with manufacturer name/address, machine designation, mandatory marking, series/type, year of construction and serial number. The amendment adds a requirement to include specifications of spare parts when they impact operator health and safety.
- Embroidery machines: Clarifies that, given certain process and design constraints, embroidery machines may not require shields for needle break protection, lever protective fixtures or finger deflectors as defined in the standard.
- Measurement clarifications: Edits remove some background/environmental correction text and update measurement-surface dimensional guidance (e.g., largest dimension > 10 m).
Applications and who uses it
- Machine manufacturers and designers use the standard to design compliant, safe industrial sewing machines and systems.
- Safety engineers and risk assessors apply its PL and guarding guidance for control system selection and hazard mitigation.
- Test laboratories and acoustic consultants use the amended noise criteria and measurement references.
- Purchasing/specification teams, compliance officers and notified bodies rely on the standard for CE conformity assessment under the Machinery Directive.
- Maintenance and spare‑parts managers use the documentation requirements to ensure safe servicing.
