ISO 10893-12:2011 specifies requirements for the automated full peripheral ultrasonic testing of seamless and welded steel tubes, with the exception of submerged arc-welded (SAW) tubes, for wall thickness measurement. It specifies the testing method and corresponding calibration procedures. It can also be applicable to the testing of circular hollow sections. ISO 10893-12:2011 is applicable to the thickness measurement of tubes with a specified outside diameter equal to or greater than 25,4 mm and a minimum wall thickness of 2,6 mm, unless otherwise agreed on.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 10893-12:2011 specifies requirements for automated full peripheral ultrasonic thickness testing of seamless and welded steel tubes (except submerged arc-welded - SAW) for wall thickness measurement. The standard defines test methods, calibration procedures and reporting requirements for non-destructive testing (NDT) of tubes with an outside diameter ≥ 25.4 mm and a minimum wall thickness of 2.6 mm. It can also be applied to circular hollow sections and may be combined with other ultrasonic inspections (e.g., ISO 10893-8).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Seamless and welded (non-SAW) steel tubes; OD ≥ 25.4 mm; wall thickness ≥ 2.6 mm unless otherwise agreed.
- Ultrasonic method: Single or multiple pulse-echo technique with piezoelectric or electromagnetic transducers; ultrasound transmitted normal to tube surface to measure thickness.
- Scanning strategy: Relative motion between probe assembly and tube producing equidistant, non-coincident helical paths along tube length. Full peripheral does not necessarily mean 100% surface scan; minimum coverage is 10% of surface area unless otherwise specified.
- Transducer guidance: Suggested maximum transducer (or active phased-array aperture) width ~25 mm; larger transducers allowed if capability is demonstrated.
- Calibration and reference tube: Use a reference tube or sample that matches nominal diameter, thickness, surface finish, heat treatment and acoustic properties of tested tube for calibration.
- Equipment functionality: Systems must classify tubes as acceptable or suspect and support automated trigger/alarm levels with marking, recording and/or sorting.
- Personnel and quality: Operators must be qualified per ISO 9712 / ISO 11484; operations authorized and supervised according to documented procedures and by a Level 3 NDT responsible person.
- Pre-test conditions: Tubes should be tested after completion of primary production processes and must be straight and free of foreign matter that would interfere with testing.
Applications
- Routine thickness verification in tube production and quality control for oil & gas, structural, mechanical and pressure-tube applications.
- Inline automated inspection on production lines for seamless and welded tube manufacturers.
- Acceptance and sorting of tube deliveries by manufacturers, purchasers or third-party inspection bodies.
- Can be combined with lamination-detection ultrasonic inspections to optimize inspection workflows.
Who uses this standard
- Steel tube manufacturers and quality engineers
- NDT service providers and inspection labs
- Purchasing/quality departments in industries using steel tubing (energy, construction, automotive, hydraulics)
- Third-party inspectors and certification bodies
