Overview
EN ISO 10893-3:2011 specifies requirements for automated full-peripheral magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing of seamless and welded ferromagnetic steel tubes (excluding submerged arc-welded - SAW - tubes). The standard covers detection of predominantly longitudinal and, by agreement, transverse imperfections, and applies to tubes with an outside diameter of ≥ 10 mm. It can also be applied to hollow sections and is intended for in-line inspection after primary production processes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test method: Automated full-peripheral magnetic flux leakage scanning so the entire tube surface is examined. Relative movement between tube and transducers must ensure complete coverage.
- Detection orientation: Unless otherwise specified, the method is used for predominantly longitudinal defects; transverse detection is possible by agreement.
- Equipment limits:
- Maximum individual transducer width (parallel to defect major axis): 30 mm.
- Relative test speed must not vary by more than ±10% during scanning.
- Operational requirements:
- Tubes should be sufficiently straight and free of surface contaminants that could impair the test.
- A short untestable length at each tube end is permitted and handled per product standards or purchase agreement.
- Calibration & reference: Use of reference tubes (containing notches, drill holes or recesses) for equipment calibration and verification is required. The standard defines terms such as reference sample/tube and reference standard.
- Personnel: Operators must be qualified in accordance with ISO 9712, ISO 11484, or equivalent employer systems; NDT operations authorized by an employer-level Level 3.
- Output & sorting: Equipment shall classify tubes as acceptable or suspect using automated trigger/alarm levels and provide marking or sorting actions.
- Limitations: Annex A lists practical limitations of the MFL method; users should consult it for thickness and detectability constraints.
Applications
- In-line quality control of steel tube production (seamless and welded, excluding SAW) to detect longitudinal or transverse imperfections.
- Final inspection before shipping or downstream processing for pipe, casing, structural tubing and certain hollow sections.
- Integration into automated production lines for high-throughput inspection, marking, and rejection/sorting.
Who should use this standard
- Tube manufacturers and mill quality engineers
- NDT service providers and equipment suppliers (MFL systems)
- Purchasers and specifiers of steel tubes (quality assurance teams)
- Certification bodies and third‑party inspectors involved in tube acceptance
