ISO/IEEE 11073-10427:2018 establishes a normative defi nition of communication between devices containing a power source (agents) and managers (e.g., cell phones, personal computers, personal health appliances, set-top boxes) in a manner that enables plug-and-play interoperability. Using existing terminology, information profi les, applica-tion profi le standards, and transport standards as defi ned in other ISO/IEEE 11073 standards, this standard de-fi nes a common core of communication functionality of personal health devices (PHDs) containing a battery, including: 1) current device power status (e.g., on mains or on battery); 2) power charge status (e.g., percent of full charge); and 3) estimated time remaining (e.g., minutes).
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 11073-10427:2018 (ISO/IEEE 11073-10427:2018) is a health informatics standard that defines a device specialization for power status monitoring of personal health devices (PHDs). It establishes a normative definition of communication between battery- or mains-powered devices (agents) and managers (for example, cell phones, personal computers, personal health appliances or set‑top boxes) to enable plug-and-play interoperability across the ISO/IEEE 11073 family. The standard reuses existing terminology, information profiles, application profile standards and transport standards from other ISO/IEEE 11073 parts to define a common core of power-related communication functionality.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Agent–Manager Communication: Normative messaging model for exchanging power and battery information between PHD agents and managers to support interoperable device connections.
- Core Power Data Elements: Standardized semantics for:
- Current device power status (e.g., mains vs. battery),
- Power charge status (e.g., percentage of full charge),
- Estimated time remaining (e.g., minutes left).
- Interoperability and Plug‑and‑Play: Requirements to ensure different vendors’ PHDs and managers can discover and interpret power-status information consistently.
- Integration with ISO/IEEE 11073 Profiles: Uses existing information profiles and transport layers from the 11073 family so implementers can map power status monitoring into broader PHD communication frameworks.
- Normative Definitions: Formal data types, state models and message semantics (as defined by the 11073 family) to reduce ambiguity in implementation.
Practical Applications and Who Uses This Standard
- Device manufacturers of wearables, portable monitors, infusion pumps and other battery‑powered personal health devices use the standard to expose consistent battery and power status to host systems.
- Mobile app and medical software developers implement the manager side to monitor device power for user alerts, safe operation, and data quality management.
- Healthcare integrators and system vendors include power-status monitoring in device management, asset tracking and clinical workflows to avoid unexpected device downtime.
- Interoperability test labs and certification bodies use the standard to validate that devices correctly report power information and behave safely in mixed-vendor environments.
- Hospitals and telehealth providers benefit from standardized battery reporting to maintain continuity of care and reduce risk from device failures.
Related Standards
- Part of the ISO/IEEE 11073 family - complements other 11073 device specializations, information profiles and transport standards used in personal health device communication and health informatics.
