Overview
EN ISO 11127-2:2021 (ISO 11127-2:2020) specifies a laboratory sieving method for determining the particle size distribution of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. It is part of the ISO 11127 series of test methods and complements the ISO 11126 series that defines abrasive types and grade requirements. The standard provides a repeatable procedure to support quality control, procurement and coating preparation decisions.
Key Topics
- Scope and relationship: Part 2 addresses particle size distribution by sieving and is used together with ISO 11127-1 (sampling) and the ISO 11126 product specifications.
- Apparatus: Typical laboratory equipment plus specified circular test sieves (square openings, metal frames) compliant with ISO 565 and a rotating sieve machine (≈300 min⁻¹) with timer. A balance accurate to 0.1 g and a sample divider or riffler are required.
- Sample size and preparation: Obtain a representative sample per ISO 11127-1. Use a sample divider to obtain a test portion of 100 g to 200 g; weigh to 0.1 g accuracy.
- Sieving procedure: Stack sieves with the largest aperture on top and smallest at the bottom, include a pan to collect fines. Use the sieve sizes indicated for the grade under test (see ISO 11126) and operate the rotating sieve machine for 15 minutes with the top covered.
- Results calculation and acceptance: For each sieve, calculate the percentage retained as mass retained divided by the test portion mass ×100. Perform duplicate determinations; if results differ by more than 10 % (relative), repeat the test. Report the mean of two valid determinations to the nearest 1%.
Applications
- Coating preparation and specification: Ensures abrasives supplied for surface preparation meet the intended particle size grading for predictable surface profile and cleaning performance.
- Quality control and incoming inspection: Laboratories and purchasers use the method to verify batch conformity and to support acceptance/rejection decisions.
- Procurement and supplier communication: A standardized size distribution report simplifies specification, comparison of products, and traceability of material properties.
