ISO 11148-6:2012 applies to hand-held non-electric power tools (hereinafter "assembly power tools for threaded fasteners") intended for tightening or installing of threaded fasteners. The assembly power tools for threaded fasteners can be powered by compressed air, hydraulic fluid or internal combustion engines and are intended for use by one operator and supported by the operator's hand or hands, with or without a suspension, e.g. a balancer. ISO 11148-6:2012 covers air-hydraulic impulse wrenches, impact wrenches, fastener installation tools, nutrunners, open-ended spanners (crow-foot with open-ended socket or tube nut wrench), ratchet wrenches and screwdrivers. ISO 11148-6:2012 does not cover special requirements and modifications of assembly power tools for threaded fasteners for the purpose of mounting them in fixtures. ISO 11148-6:2012 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events when the tools are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer, with the exception of the use of assembly power tools for threaded fasteners in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 11148-6:2012 - Hand-held non-electric power tools - Safety requirements - Part 6: Assembly power tools for threaded fasteners (ISO 11148-6:2012) is a CEN/ISO standard that defines safety requirements for hand‑held, non‑electric assembly power tools used to tighten or install threaded fasteners. It applies to tools powered by compressed air, hydraulic fluid or internal combustion engines and intended for single‑operator, hand‑supported use (with or without a balancer). The standard addresses foreseeable use and misuse (except use in potentially explosive atmospheres) and aligns with EU Directive 2006/42/EC where applicable.
Key Topics
The standard covers safety, verification and user information for a range of tool types:
- Tools covered: air‑hydraulic impulse wrenches, impact wrenches, fastener installation tools, nutrunners, open‑ended spanners (crow‑foot), ratchet wrenches and screwdrivers.
- Safety areas addressed:
- Mechanical safety (guards, hazards from moving parts)
- Thermal safety (hot surfaces)
- Noise reduction and acoustic testing
- Vibration measurement and mitigation
- Materials and exhaust/emissions considerations
- Ergonomics, operator interface and controls
- Protection against unintentional start
- Labelling, markings and instructions for safe use and maintenance
- Verification: test conditions and methods for noise, vibration, structural integrity and other safety verifications are specified.
- Exclusions: it does not cover special modifications for fixture mounting or use in potentially explosive atmospheres (see EN 13463‑1 for non‑electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres).
Applications
EN ISO 11148-6:2012 is practical for:
- Automotive and aerospace assembly lines (impact wrenches, nutrunners)
- Industrial maintenance and plant operations
- Construction and mechanical workshops
- Tool design and product development where safety and conformity are required
The standard helps reduce operator injury, manage noise and vibration exposure, and ensure consistent safety labelling and documentation.
Who Should Use It
- Manufacturers and designers of non‑electric assembly power tools
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Safety and compliance engineers implementing machinery safety programs
- Procurement and maintenance teams specifying safe tools for workshops and production lines
Related Standards
- Other parts of the ISO 11148 series (Parts 1–13 cover different tool types)
- ISO 3864 (safety colours and signs), ISO 7000 / ISO 7010 (graphical symbols)
- EN ISO 11148‑6 supports conformity to EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (see Annex ZA)
By following EN ISO 11148-6:2012, organizations can align tool design, testing and documentation with recognized safety best practices for hand‑held assembly power tools for threaded fasteners.
