Overview
EN ISO 11252:2013 (ISO 11252:2013) defines the minimum documentation, marking and labelling requirements for laser devices and laser products classified under IEC 60825-1, including laser diodes and devices defined in ISO 11145. The standard focuses on the content and format of technical data sheets and user information needed for safe integration, operation, maintenance and disposal of laser devices. It augments but does not supersede IEC 60825-1 and uses SI units throughout.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to laser systems integrated into products per IEC 60825-1 and devices integrated in laser units or processing machines per ISO 11553-1/-2.
- Not intended for complete ready-to-use laser products enclosed to prevent external emission, incoherent lamps, or LEDs (IEC 62471).
- Technical data sheet (Clause 5)
- Must include: model/type, manufacturer/supplier, device type, intended use, system boundary and interfaces, technical characteristics for intended use, lifetime/maintenance info (ISO 17526), and associated hazards.
- Annex A provides a model technical data sheet.
- Beam output characteristics (Clause 5.2)
- Manufacturers must report measured beam parameters and the measurement method. Relevant measurement standards include:
- Other documentation topics
- Electrical and non-electrical power supply, liquids and gases, environmental conditions, mechanical interfaces, safety information, marking and labelling (Clause 7).
- Formal requirements
- All values in SI units. Documentation must cover the full life cycle: transport, assembly, integration, normal operation, maintenance, service, decommissioning and disposal.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers and suppliers of laser devices - to prepare compliant technical data sheets, labels and user information.
- System integrators and machine builders - to verify interface, power and environmental requirements during integration into processing machines.
- Safety engineers and compliance officers - to ensure product documentation meets laser‑safety and machinery directive expectations.
- Test labs and procurement teams - to evaluate and compare devices using standardized performance and safety data.
