This document specifies requirements and test methods for pipes and fittings which are part of piping systems for the rehabilitation, by means of renovation and trenchless replacement, of underground non-pressure and pressure drains and sewers and water supply networks, which transport water intended for human consumption, including raw water pipelines. It is applicable to polyethylene (PE) pipes, fittings and assemblies, as manufactured and as installed. It is not applicable to the existing pipeline. It is applicable to the following technique families for renovation, intended to be used at an operating temperature of 20 °C as the reference temperature: lining with continuous pipes; lining with close-fit pipes. This document is applicable to the following technique families for trenchless replacement, intended to be used at an operating temperature of 20 °C as the reference temperature: pipe bursting and pipe extraction; horizontal directional drilling and impact moling. NOTE For applications operating at constant temperatures greater than 20 °C and up to 40 °C, see ISO 4427-1:2019, Annex A. When used with lining with continuous pipes, lining with close-fit pipes and trenchless replacement technique families, this document is applicable to: PE solid wall single layered pipes (nominal outside diameter, dn), including any identification stripes; PE pipes with co-extruded layers on either or both the outside and inside of the pipe (total outside diameter, dn), as specified in Annex D, where all layers have the same MRS rating. Furthermore, when used with lining with continuous pipes and trenchless replacement this document is applicable to: PE coated pipes (outside diameter, dn) having a peelable, contiguous, thermoplastics additional layer on the outside of the pipe (“coated pipe”), as specified in Annex D. This document is applicable to jointing by means of butt fusion and electrofusion and to fabricated and injection-moulded fittings and mechanical connections of PE.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 11300-1:2026 is the international standard issued by CEN specifying the requirements and test methods for polyethylene (PE) pipes, fittings, and assemblies used in the rehabilitation of underground drains, sewers, and water supply networks. The scope includes systems intended for both non-pressure and pressure applications, transporting water for human consumption, including raw water pipelines. This standard addresses techniques such as renovation through lining (continuous and close-fit pipes) and trenchless replacement (such as pipe bursting and horizontal directional drilling), all using PE material.
Key Topics
- Polyethylene Pipe Systems: The standard details the characteristics of PE pipes and fittings used for the rehabilitation of buried water and sewer systems. It covers solid wall pipes, pipes with co-extruded layers, and coated pipes suitable for various installation techniques.
- Rehabilitation Methods:
- Renovation: Including lining with continuous pipes and close-fit pipes, designed to restore the function of existing pipelines with minimal disruption.
- Trenchless Replacement: Such as pipe bursting, pipe extraction, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and impact moling, all designed to replace old pipes without extensive excavation.
- Operating Conditions: Requirements and testing outlined in the standard are based on a reference temperature of 20 °C. For higher operating temperatures (up to 40 °C), reference is made to ISO 4427-1:2019.
- Jointing and Connections: EN ISO 11300-1:2026 covers various jointing methods appropriate for PE, including butt fusion, electrofusion, and mechanical fittings, ensuring structural integrity and water tightness.
- Component Characteristics: The standard specifies essential attributes like dimension, mechanical and physical properties, as well as marking and identification requirements for pipes and fittings.
Applications
EN ISO 11300-1:2026 provides vital guidelines for:
- Utilities and Municipalities: Ensuring robust standards for rehabilitation projects of underground sewer and water networks, minimizing service interruptions and environmental impact.
- Engineering and Construction Firms: Offering clear parameters for material selection, installation, and quality assurance when using PE piping systems in urban infrastructure rehabilitation.
- Manufacturers: Establishing uniform requirements for the production and supply of PE pipes, fittings, and accessories compatible with modern, trenchless installation techniques.
- Asset Managers and Water Authorities: Providing solid assurance on longevity, maintenance requirements, and safe conveyance of potable water after rehabilitation works.
Typical application scenarios covered include:
- Repair and renovation of aging water and sewage infrastructure without full excavation.
- Upgrades of pipeline networks in densely populated or environmentally sensitive areas.
- Replacement projects needing minimal ground disturbance or rapid installation.
Related Standards
To ensure full compliance and integration in pipeline rehabilitation projects, refer to the following related standards:

Practical Value
EN ISO 11300-1:2026 delivers a comprehensive basis for the reliable rehabilitation of critical underground infrastructure using PE piping solutions. By following this standard, stakeholders benefit from:
- Improved durability: Ensuring consistent, high-quality installations and product performance
- Cost-effective solutions: Leveraging trenchless and lining technologies to minimize public and environmental disruption
- Regulatory compliance: Meeting safety and hygiene requirements for potable water and wastewater applications
- Enhanced interoperability: Standardized methods supporting global best practices and product compatibility within the industry
This standard is an essential reference for anyone involved in pipeline rehabilitation, from planning and design to execution and maintenance, ensuring safe, sustainable, and efficient water and wastewater management networks.
