This document specifies requirements and test methods for pipes and fittings which are part of piping systems for the rehabilitation of non-pressure underground drains and sewers. NOTE It is not applicable to use of PVC-U material for rehabilitation of pipes under pressure. It is applicable to unplasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) pipes, fittings and assemblies, as manufactured and as installed with service temperature not exceeding 35 °C. It is not applicable to the existing pipeline. This document is applicable to the renovation technique family “lining with close-fit pipes”.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 11300-3:2026 specifies requirements and test methods for unplasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) pipes, fittings, and assemblies used in the rehabilitation of non-pressure underground drains, sewers, and water supply networks. Developed by CEN in collaboration with ISO, this standard focuses on systems utilizing the “lining with close-fit pipes” technique for renovation projects, defining both the performance criteria and important terminology relevant to these types of projects.
This standard is specifically not applicable to the rehabilitation of pipelines intended to operate under pressure or existing pipelines themselves, and is limited to applications with service temperatures not exceeding 35°C.
Key Topics
-
Material Requirements: The standard details the required properties for PVC-U material, specifying the use of virgin material, with clear guidance on the use of reprocessable and recyclable materials. For close-fit lining applications, only materials that ensure consistent quality and reliability are endorsed.
-
Pipe and Fitting Characteristics: Pipes and fittings must meet visual and performance requirements both as manufactured (“M” stage) and as installed (“I” stage), including dimensional tolerances, color guidelines, and surface quality. Marking requirements are also provided to guarantee traceability and compliance.
-
Test Methods: EN ISO 11300-3:2026 references a range of ISO standards for evaluating mechanical, physical, and geometric characteristics, ensuring pipes and fittings deliver reliable performance after installation.
-
Installation Considerations: Guidance is provided for preparatory work, storage, handling, transportation, and equipment requirements. The document states the need for appropriate inspection measures and documentation throughout the installation process.
-
Scope of Application: Focus is given to non-pressure applications, especially in rehabilitation projects where close-fit lining is selected, excluding rehabilitation under pressure.
Applications
EN ISO 11300-3:2026 is directly relevant to:
-
Municipal Infrastructure Modernization: Used by local authorities and contractors for upgrading and rehabilitating aging underground drainage and sewer networks without the need for full excavation.
-
Utility Companies: Water utility providers employ the defined materials and methods for trenchless or minimal-intrusion renewal of pipelines, maximizing operational uptime and minimizing surface disruption.
-
Engineering and Construction Firms: Provides standardized criteria for material selection, installation procedures, and conformity assessment, supporting efficient project delivery and compliance with European regulations.
-
Asset Management: Ensures long-term reliability and performance of rehabilitated pipeline systems by standardizing product characteristics and installation quality.
Related Standards
EN ISO 11300-3:2026 forms part of a broader family of standards dedicated to pipeline rehabilitation. These include:
- ISO 11300-1: General requirements for rehabilitation of underground piping systems
- ISO 11300-2: Requirements for thermoset composite materials in rehabilitation
- ISO/TS 23818-3: Guidance for the assessment of conformity to the requirements of piping rehabilitation standards
- ISO 11295: Overview and classification of plastics piping systems used for pipeline rehabilitation
- EN 1401-1: Specifications for PVC-U pipes and fittings for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage
This standard supersedes EN ISO 11296-1:2018 and EN ISO 11296-3:2018, reflecting updated technical requirements and harmonization within the ISO 11300 series.
By adopting EN ISO 11300-3:2026, stakeholders benefit from clear, consistent specifications for PVC-U piping systems, facilitating quality assurance and interoperability in the rehabilitation of underground utilities. This contributes to efficient, durable, and sustainable infrastructure management across Europe and internationally.
