Overview
EN ISO 12209:2013/A1:2016 (CEN) is an amendment to ISO 12209 that updates outlet connections for gas cylinder valves used with compressed breathable air, extending specified threaded outlet connections to include cylinders with working pressures up to 500 bar. The amendment was approved by CEN in December 2016 and issued as a corrected version in March 2017.
Key topics
- Scope extension: Adds a dedicated 500 bar threaded outlet connection in addition to the existing 232 bar and 300 bar types.
- Connection components: Each outlet connection comprises three parts - valve outlet, filling connector and gas withdrawal connector - and the use of the specified filling connector is essential for safe operation at the intended working pressure.
- Dimensional specifications: Detailed figures and tables define basic dimensions and tolerances for the 232 bar, 300 bar and new 500 bar connections (valve outlets, filling, withdrawal and plug connections). General geometric tolerances follow ISO 2768‑1 class m.
- Materials and compatibility: Material, gas/material compatibility and valve prototype testing are covered by referenced standards (see Related Standards).
- Qualification and testing: The amendment adds a durability/leak test (A.2.4): after 500 cycles, the connection is tightened to 1.1× the predetermined torque, pressurized to 1.2× the working pressure, and the leak rate is measured. The amendment defines failure as abnormal damage and/or leakage at or above the stated leak threshold.
Applications
This amendment is directly relevant to:
- Manufacturers of gas cylinders and cylinder valves designing outlets for compressed breathable air up to 500 bar.
- Valve and connector designers and suppliers who need to meet dimensional and tolerance requirements for filling and withdrawal interfaces.
- Test laboratories and quality teams performing endurance and leakage qualification of cylinder outlet connections.
- Safety engineers, procurement and regulatory compliance teams specifying fittings for breathing air systems used in industrial breathing apparatus, diving, firefighting, medical and other sectors that rely on compressed breathable air.
Practical value
- Ensures interchangeability and safe mating of valves, filling and withdrawal connectors at high working pressures.
- Reduces risk of incorrect connector use by standardizing dimensions, threads and sealing interfaces.
- Provides a testable qualification procedure (cycling, torque, overpressure and leak-rate check) to help validate product safety and lifetime performance.
