Overview
EN ISO 1247-2:2023 (ISO 1247-2:2021) specifies requirements and corresponding test methods for vacuum metallized aluminium pigments (VMP) intended for use in paints and printing ink industries. VMPs are produced by a vacuum metallizing or physical vapour deposition (PVD) process and typically have non-leafing characteristics. This standard has been adopted by CEN without modification and complements ISO 1247-1:2021 for general aluminium pigment requirements.
Key Topics
- Scope and definitions: Defines the vacuum metallized aluminium pigment (VMP) and references terminology from ISO 18451-1 and ISO 18451-2.
- Requirements and test methods: Specifies mandatory properties and the corresponding test methods, including:
- Non-volatile matter (see ISO 1247-1:2021, Clause 8) with minimum limits noted in the standard.
- Residue on 45 µm sieve (maximum 1.0 % mass fraction by default) - a detailed wet-sieve procedure is provided (sampling, solvent selection, filtration and drying at 105 °C ± 2 °C for 1 h).
- Water content limits (see ISO 1247-1:2021, Clause 14), with increased allowance when a hydrophilic solvent is used.
- Particle size distribution by instrumental methods (ISO 13320) - specific limits to be agreed between parties.
- Metallic impurities - criteria and test conditions are referenced to ISO 1247-1:2021 (Clause 17) and are subject to agreement between supplier and buyer.
- Sampling and test reporting: Sampling in accordance with ISO 15528; test reports must include product identification, reference to ISO 1247-2:2021, results, deviations and test dates.
Applications
EN ISO 1247-2:2023 is tailored for manufacturers, quality laboratories, formulators and purchasers in the coatings and printing ink sectors. Practical benefits include:
- Assured quality control for VMP batches used in decorative, automotive and industrial coatings.
- Reproducible visual appearance when matching samples and verifying metallic effect in paint formulations.
- Clear acceptance criteria for particle size, residue and non-volatile content to support supplier agreements and reduce batch variability.
