ISO 12952-1:2010 specifies test methods for assessing the ignitability of all bedding items, when subjected to a smouldering cigarette. ISO 12952-1:2010 applies to bedding items, which can normally be placed on a mattress, for example: mattress covers; underlays; incontinence sheets and pads; sheets; blankets; electric blankets; quilts (duvets) and covers; pillows (whatever the filling) and bolsters; pillowcases. ISO 12952-1:2010 does not apply to mattresses, bed bases and mattress pads.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 12952-1:2010 / ISO 12952-1:2010 - "Textiles - Assessment of the ignitability of bedding items - Part 1: Ignition source: smouldering cigarette" is a CEN-adopted international test method for evaluating how bedding items respond to a smouldering cigarette. The standard specifies specimen preparation, test apparatus, ignition source characteristics and pass/fail criteria for bedding ignitability. It applies to items normally placed on a mattress (sheets, blankets, pillowcases, pillows, duvets, mattress covers, underlays, incontinence pads, electric blankets and similar), but explicitly does not apply to mattresses, bed bases or mattress pads.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Assesses ignitability by a smouldering cigarette to evaluate fire risk from smokers’ materials.
- Test principle: A specimen placed on a test substrate is exposed to a smouldering cigarette placed on/under the specimen; subsequent smouldering or flaming behavior is observed.
- Ignition source (cigarette) specification:
- Length: (68 ± 2) mm
- Diameter: (8.0 ± 0.5) mm
- Mass: (0.95 ± 0.10) g
- Smouldering rate: (8 ± 2) min/40 mm (measured under specified conditions)
- Apparatus:
- Test rig: open mesh platform (at least 450 × 450 mm) on a solid base
- Test enclosure: room > 20 m3 or smaller enclosure with controlled airflow; air velocity ≤ 0.2 m/s at specimen
- Timing: stopwatch capable of 1 h resolution
- Criteria of ignition:
- Progressive smouldering - escalating smouldering requiring extinction, smouldering until near-consumption within 1 hour, or externally detectable smoke/heat/glow after 1 hour
- Flaming ignition - any flame initiated by the cigarette
- Health & safety: Tests produce smoke and can be hard to extinguish; ventilation, PPE and suitable extinguishing/containment measures are mandatory.
- Test reporting and final examination: Observations, time to ignition/propagation and post-test evidence of smouldering are documented.
Applications and users
Who uses EN ISO 12952-1:2010:
- Textile and bedding manufacturers (product development and safety design)
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies (compliance testing)
- Retailers and procurement teams (supplier verification)
- Regulators and standards bodies (safety regulation and conformity assessment)
- Fire safety engineers and risk assessors
Practical uses:
- Validate product safety against cigarette ignition
- Support labeling, compliance and market access in jurisdictions referencing EN/ISO test methods
- Inform design changes (materials, construction, covers) to reduce ignitability risk
