This document provides guidance and requirements for the description, planning and development of new systems, as well as for the integration of existing information systems, both within one enterprise and across different healthcare organizations, through an architecture integrating the common data and business logic into a specific architectural layer (i.e. the middleware), distinct from individual applications and accessible throughout the whole information system through services, as shown in Figure 2.

EN ISO 12967-1:2020 / ISO 12967-1:2020 - Health informatics - Service architecture (HISA) - Part 1: Enterprise viewpoint provides a structured methodology and requirements for describing, planning and developing health information systems at the enterprise and cross‑organization level. The standard specifies an architectural approach that places common data and business logic in a dedicated middleware layer (the HISA middleware), distinct from individual applications and accessible via services across the whole information system. It supersedes the 2011 edition and aligns with the ISO/CEN health informatics work (ISO/TC 215, CEN/TC 251).
