This document specifies the lighting and the procedure for the visual assessment of degraded areas, spots or other defects on or in coatings. This document is not applicable to the visual comparison of colour, which can be assessed using ISO 3668. NOTE See Annex A for examples of the possible applications of this document.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 13076:2019 - Paints and varnishes - Lighting and procedure for visual assessments of coatings specifies standardized lighting conditions and a repeatable procedure for the visual assessment of degraded areas, spots or other defects on or in coatings. It covers both natural and artificial daylight conditions for routine and arbitration inspections and clarifies what information to include in test reports. This standard does not apply to visual colour comparison (see ISO 3668).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Visual detection and assessment of coating defects (blisters, cracks, spots, delamination, etc.), excluding colour-matching tasks.
- Lighting types:
- Artificial: Fluorescent lamp or dull LED with a wide-angle light source and aluminium-coated reflector; colour temperature 6 500 K (CIE D65) and colour rendering class 1A (CRI R_a ≈ 90–100). LED lighting was added in the 2019 revision.
- Natural: Use diffuse daylight (e.g., partly cloudy sky on a north-facing panel; south-facing in the southern hemisphere). Avoid direct sunlight.
- Illuminance requirements:
- Natural daylight: Illuminance on the specimen should be not less than 2 000 lx.
- Artificial lighting: Position lamp so that surface illuminance is not less than 750 lx; measure illuminance after setup.
- Procedure notes:
- Routine assessments may use natural or artificial daylight; arbitration assessments shall use precisely controlled artificial lighting.
- Test panels may be inclined; defects are often most visible at the light/dark boundary produced by the lamp.
- Test report: Must reference ISO 13076:2019 and indicate whether assessment used natural or artificial lighting; if artificial, include the type of light source.
Applications
EN ISO 13076:2019 is used wherever repeatable visual inspections of coatings are required, including:
- Laboratory and factory quality control and final inspection
- Arbitration and dispute resolution of coating acceptance
- Routine assessments after accelerated tests or field exposure
- Preparation of test reports for standardized methods listed in Annex A (examples): cross-cut (ISO 2409), impact tests (ISO 6272), stone chipping (ISO 20567), chemical resistance (ISO 2812), defects evaluation (ISO 4628 series), scratch/mar resistance (ISO 1518), adhesion (ISO 4624), scrub resistance (ISO 11998).
Who should use it
- Coatings manufacturers and formulators
- Independent testing laboratories and inspection bodies
- Specifiers, OEMs and asset owners (automotive, industrial, protective coatings)
- Quality assurance and R&D teams performing standardized coating tests
Related standards
- ISO 3668 (colour comparison - excluded by ISO 13076)
- ISO 4628 series (evaluation of degradation and defect designation)
- ISO 2409, ISO 6272, ISO 2812, ISO 1518, ISO 4624, ISO 11998 (examples referenced in Annex A)
