EN ISO 13565-1:1997 (ISO 13565-1:1996) is a Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) standard that defines a filtering method and general measurement conditions for profile-based surface texture assessment of surfaces with stratified functional properties - i.e., a finely finished plateau interrupted by relatively deep valleys and minimal waviness. The standard’s filtering approach reduces valley-induced distortion of the reference line so that roughness parameters are more representative of the functional plateau.

Filtering process (multi-stage):

Traversing direction: perpendicular to the direction of lay unless otherwise specified.

Cut-off wavelength selection:

Preferred cut-off wavelength k = 0.8 mm; k = 2.5 mm permitted in justified exceptional cases and must be declared in specifications and test results.
Table 1 of the standard provides the relationship between cut-off wavelength and evaluation length.
