This document prescribes requirements for the classification of nickel and nickel-alloy covered electrodes for manual metal arc welding and overlaying. The classification of the covered electrodes is based on the chemical composition of their deposited all-weld metal. EN ISO 14172:2023 specifies the classification of covered electrodes used for manual metal arc welding (MMA / SMAW) of nickel and nickel alloys. This fourth edition (2023) supersedes the 2015 edition and is the CEN-endorsed version of ISO 14172:2023. The standard covers how to identify and designate covered electrodes based on the chemical composition of the deposited all‑weld metal, and it sets the testing and documentation requirements needed for classification.
