ISO 1452-4:2009 specifies the characteristics of valves made from unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑U) for piping systems intended for water supply and for buried and above-ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods referred to. In conjunction with ISO 1452-1, ISO 1452-2, ISO 1452-3 and ISO 1452-5 it is applicable to PVC‑U valves with components of PVC-U, other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for the following: - water mains and services buried in ground; - conveyance of water above ground for both outside and inside buildings; - buried and above-ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It is applicable to valves in piping systems intended for the supply of water under pressure up to and including 25 °C (cold water) intended for human consumption and for general purposes as well as for waste water under pressure. It is also applicable to valves for the conveyance of water and waste water up to and including 45 °C.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 1452-4:2009 specifies the characteristics and test parameters for valves made from unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑U) used in plastics piping systems for water supply and for buried and above‑ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. The standard covers PVC‑U valve bodies and assemblies that may include other plastics and non‑plastic components, and it defines requirements for use with potable water, general service water and wastewater at defined temperatures.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Valves for buried water mains and services, above‑ground conveyance (inside and outside buildings), and pressurised drainage/sewerage.
- Intended for cold water up to and including 25 °C for human consumption and general purposes; also applicable for water/wastewater up to 45 °C (with guidance from ISO 1452‑2 for higher temperatures).
- Valve types covered
- Solvent‑cemented valves, valves with elastomeric ring seal joints, and flanged valves.
- Materials and components
- Requirements for PVC‑U valve bodies and for additional components (other plastics and non‑plastics).
- Geometrical and dimensional characteristics
- Measurement methods, nominal diameters and dimensional tolerances (including an annex for imperial/inch‑sized valves).
- Mechanical and physical properties
- Tests and limits for resistance to internal pressure, crushing, durability, and functional performance.
- Chemical and sealing requirements
- Chemical compatibility, sealing ring specifications and adhesives for joints.
- Performance and marking
- Performance requirements, minimum marking details and additional marking options to ensure traceability and correct selection.
- Test parameters
- Specifies parameters for referenced test methods used to verify compliance.
Applications and users
EN ISO 1452‑4:2009 is used to ensure safe, durable and compatible PVC‑U valve installations in:
- Municipal and industrial water mains and service lines
- Building services (internal and external) for potable and non‑potable water
- Buried and above‑ground drainage and sewerage under pressure Primary users include:
- Valve and pipe manufacturers and component suppliers
- Specifying engineers and designers for water and wastewater systems
- Installers and contractors working with PVC‑U piping
- Water utilities, asset owners and regulatory bodies evaluating material fitness-for‑purpose and compliance
