This document gives guidance and recommendations for optimizing energy usage and maintaining energy efficiency in new and existing cleanrooms, clean zones and separative devices. It provides guidance for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of cleanrooms. This document covers all cleanroom-specific features and can be used in different areas to optimize energy use in electronic, aerospace, nuclear, pharmaceutical, hospital, medical device, food industries and other clean air applications. It also introduces the concept of benchmarking for the performance assessment and comparison of cleanroom energy efficiencies, while maintaining performance levels to ISO 14644 requirements[2][3].
Abstract
EN ISO 14644-16:2019 - Energy efficiency in cleanrooms and separative devices
Overview
EN ISO 14644-16:2019 provides guidance and recommendations to optimize energy use and maintain energy efficiency in cleanrooms, clean zones and separative devices. Intended for both new builds and existing facilities, the standard covers design, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning while ensuring required cleanroom performance levels in accordance with the ISO 14644 series. It also introduces benchmarking for performance assessment and comparison of cleanroom energy efficiencies.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Energy reduction evaluation process - structured steps for assessing and implementing energy savings (project team, URS review, impact assessment, implementation, monitoring).
- User Requirement Specification (URS) - how cleanroom requirements (e.g., garment levels, process needs) influence energy consumption and design choices.
- Airflow volume and compensating factors - methods to determine airflow rates, ventilation effectiveness indices and compensation factors for non-unidirectional and unidirectional systems.
- Power management - strategies for turn-down, turn-off and recovery of HVAC and supply systems to reduce energy use without compromising contamination control.
- Adaptive control - use of dynamic control systems to match environmental performance to operational needs.
- HVAC loads and equipment selection - guidance on heating/cooling load management, fan selection and filter choices to improve system efficiency.
- Lighting, training, operation and maintenance - operational best practices that materially affect energy efficiency.
- Retrofit and decommissioning - processes for upgrading existing cleanrooms and for minimizing energy waste during decommissioning.
- Benchmarking and KPIs - Annexes provide energy saving opportunities, impact assessment methods and energy performance indicators to compare facilities and justify business cases.
Applications and who should use it
- Applicable across industries: pharmaceutical, medical device, hospital, electronics, aerospace, nuclear, food and other clean air applications.
- Primary users: cleanroom designers, facilities and energy managers, HVAC engineers, validation/commissioning teams, facility owners/operators and sustainability officers.
- Use cases: designing energy-efficient cleanrooms, specifying URS, retrofitting legacy cleanrooms, preparing business cases for energy projects, and establishing benchmarking programs.
