Overview
EN ISO 14896:2009 - Plastics - Polyurethane raw materials - Determination of isocyanate content (ISO 14896:2009) specifies two validated analytical methods to measure isocyanate content (NCO content) in aromatic isocyanates used as polyurethane raw materials. The standard, adopted by CEN from ISO, covers Method A (primarily for refined TDI and MDI and their prepolymers) and Method B (suitable for refined, crude or modified isocyanates and isomer mixtures, including polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate). It is not applicable to blocked isocyanates.

- Interferences and limitations: Phosgene, carbamyl chlorides, hydrogen chloride and other acidic/basic impurities interfere with results. For crude or modified isocyanates, acidity corrections may be necessary. Not suitable for blocked isocyanates.
- Sampling and environmental controls: Samples must be protected from moisture (use inert gas blanketing) because isocyanates react with water. Laboratory relative humidity preferably below 50 %.
- Quality data: The standard includes sections on expression of results, precision and bias, and test reporting requirements.
