This document specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the pre-installation surveys, design, materials, equipment, installation, commissioning, operation, inspection, and maintenance of cathodic protection systems for the external surface of on-land pipelines. This document is applicable to on-land pipelines and piping systems used in other industries and transporting other media such as industrial gases, waters, or slurries. Throughout this document, on-land pipelines mean: pipelines that are buried; landfalls of offshore pipeline sections protected by onshore based cathodic protection installations; immersed sections of on-land pipelines such as river or lake crossings. This document is applicable to pipelines of carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, and copper. This document does not apply to pipelines made of reinforced concrete (see ISO 12696).
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15589-1:2026 is an international standard developed by CEN and ISO that specifies requirements and provides recommendations for the cathodic protection of pipeline transportation systems in the oil, gas, and lower carbon energy industries. Part 1 of this standard focuses specifically on the external surfaces of on-land pipelines made of carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, and copper. The standard is also applicable to pipelines in other industries transporting media such as industrial gases, water, or slurries, and it outlines best practices for systems including buried pipelines, landfalls of offshore pipeline sections, and immersed sections like river or lake crossings.
Adhering to EN ISO 15589-1:2026 helps ensure optimal corrosion prevention, improved operational safety, and enhanced service life for vital pipeline infrastructure.
Key Topics
The standard covers a broad range of aspects related to pipeline cathodic protection, including:
- Pre-installation surveys: Methods and requirements for assessing site and environmental conditions prior to system implementation.
- Design: Considerations for designing an effective cathodic protection system, including current demand, coating compatibility, and protective measures for various pipeline configurations.
- Materials and Equipment: Selection criteria for anodes, power sources, coatings, cables, and other integral components.
- Installation and Commissioning: Procedures for installing, testing, and verifying correct operation of cathodic protection systems, as well as documentation and commissioning tests.
- Operation, Inspection, and Maintenance: Guidelines for monitoring systems, performing regular inspections, scheduling maintenance, and addressing faults or deterioration.
- Special Considerations: Recommendations for specific cases, such as parallel or intersecting pipelines, trenchless installations, and pipelines subject to AC or DC interference.
Applications
EN ISO 15589-1:2026 is directly applicable in the following contexts:
- Oil and Gas Pipeline Networks: For pipeline operators in the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas sectors, particularly those responsible for maintaining buried or on-land transmission pipelines.
- Lower Carbon Energy Infrastructure: As the industry transitions to cleaner energy sources, the standard supports the safeguarding of pipelines used for transporting gases and other alternative energy carriers.
- Other Industrial Pipeline Systems: Operators of pipelines transporting water, industrial gases, or slurries rely on this standard for corrosion control and regulatory compliance.
- River and Lake Crossings: The document covers pipelines immersed as they traverse bodies of water, detailing protection requirements under various environmental conditions.
Applying EN ISO 15589-1:2026 enhances pipeline reliability, reduces maintenance costs, and supports compliance with both industry and regulatory expectations for asset integrity.
Related Standards
To achieve comprehensive pipeline protection, EN ISO 15589-1:2026 should be applied alongside related standards, such as:
