Overview
EN ISO 15876-5:2017/A1:2020 is the CEN-endorsed amendment to ISO 15876-5:2017, covering the fitness for purpose of polybutene (PB) plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations. Approved by CEN in October 2020 and published December 2020, this amendment updates references and test requirements used to demonstrate long‑term system performance and durability of PB piping systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
This amendment focuses on test parameters and referenced documents that define how a PB piping system is validated for service:
- Reference update: replaces the earlier reference to ISO 15876-1:2003 with ISO 15876-1:2017.
- Thermal cycling (Table 7): specifies temperature and cycle counts by application class (Class 1, 2, 4, 5)
- Maximum design temperature (Tmax): 80°C (Class 1 & 2), 70°C (Class 4), 90°C (Class 5)
- Highest test temperatures: 90°C, 90°C, 80°C, 95°C respectively; lowest test temperature 20°C for all
- Number of cycles: typically 5 000 cycles for d ≤ 160 mm and 500 cycles for d > 160 mm
- Test-piece and assembly requirements follow ISO 19893 (minimum connectors/connections; free pipe length ≥ 150 mm)
- Cycle duration is defined in footnotes (short cycles e.g. 15 min hot/15 min cold and longer cycles e.g. 150 min/150 min as applicable)
- Pressure cycling (Table 8): defines fatigue/pressure‑cycling endurance
- Test temperature: 23°C, method ISO 19892
- Number of test pieces: 3
- For d ≤ 160 mm: 10 000 cycles at ~30 cycles/min; for d > 160 mm: 5 000 cycles at ~15 cycles/min
- Pressure limits: for a design pressure of 4, 6, 8, 10 bar the upper test limits are 6.0, 9.0, 12.0, 15.0 bar respectively; lower limit 0.5 bar
Applications and users
This amendment is essential for stakeholders involved in specifying, manufacturing, testing and approving PB piping systems for potable hot and cold water:
- Manufacturers validating product families and system designs
- Test laboratories performing thermal and pressure cycling per ISO/CEN methods
- System designers, MEP engineers and specifiers needing compliant performance data
- Regulators and certification bodies assessing conformity and fitness for purpose
