Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15995:2021/A1:2024 is Amendment 1 to the international standard ISO 15995:2021, endorsed by CEN in September 2024. It updates the specifications and testing requirements for manually operated LPG cylinder valves used on gas cylinders. The amendment clarifies valve marking, connection conformity, material and assembly requirements, and testing/inspection provisions. CEN members must implement this amendment by March 2025.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Valve operation and marking
- Valves shall close when turned clockwise and open when turned anti‑clockwise.
- The handwheel must be visibly marked with directional arrows and “–/close” and “+/open”.
- Connections and qualification
- Valve inlet and outlet connections must conform to international/ regional/ national standards or qualified proprietary designs.
- Examples cited: ISO 11363‑1, ISO 15245‑1, ISO 5145, EN 15202; qualification procedures: ISO 10692‑2, CGA V‑1.
- Materials, adhesives and threaded joints
- Adhesives used in valves must be proven compatible with LPG per recognized standards.
- Anaerobic sealants are permitted for threaded joints if proven compatible (e.g., per EN 751‑1).
- Assembly integrity
- Components such as dip tubes, sediment tubes and fixed liquid level gauges must be secured to prevent disassembly during installation or operation; metal‑to‑metal engagement between vent screw and liquid level gauge is required when seals are absent.
- Testing and inspections
- The amendment revises test tables and references, clarifying when additional inspections or repeat tests are needed after design or material changes.
- Pressure testing rules updated (minimum test pressure called out for some tests, e.g., 45 bar).
- Leak tightness limits specified for external and internal tightness (leak rate threshold provided in the amendment).
- Test planning must address pressure relief valve ports (ports to be plugged, sealed or adjusted to avoid activation during tests).
- New normative reference
- MIL‑STD‑810G:2008 is added as a referenced test methodology.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: LPG cylinder and valve manufacturers, third‑party test laboratories, conformity assessors, equipment designers, LPG distributors, and regulatory bodies.
- Practical value:
- Ensures consistent safety and performance of manually operated LPG valves.
- Guides design changes, material substitutions and qualification of proprietary connections.
- Supports compliance testing, production quality control and type‑approval processes.
