This document defines the general requirements to be fulfilled for the inspection of all types of sprayers for plant protection products used in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and other areas, except knapsack sprayers. NOTE For knapsack sprayers, see ISO/FDIS 19932–3:—. The specific requirements for the different types of sprayers are defined in the relevant specific parts of the ISO 16122 series. When used in conjunction with the relevant sprayer specific part (see Annex A), this document specifies the requirements and test methods for the inspection of sprayers in use. The requirements relate mainly to the condition of the sprayer with respect to potential risks for the environment and its performance to achieve a good application. This document also includes minimum requirements for the preparation of the sprayer for the inspection and the minimum safety requirements with respect to the safety of the inspector (test operator) during the inspection.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 16122-1:2025 - Agricultural and forestry machinery - Inspection of sprayers in use - Part 1: General (ISO 16122-1:2024, corrected version 2025-05) defines the general requirements for inspecting sprayers used to apply plant protection products in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and other areas (excluding knapsack sprayers). Published by CEN/ISO, this standard sets out the scope, pre‑inspection preparation, inspection principles and minimum safety requirements for the inspector, and forms the framework for the ISO 16122 sprayer inspection series.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies to all sprayer types except knapsack sprayers (see ISO/FDIS 19932–3).
- Criteria for classification of sprayers to select appropriate specific-part methods.
- Pre‑inspection requirements
- Preparation of the inspection site and sprayer cleaning.
- Checks on power transmission, moving parts, hydraulic systems, structural/frame elements, and lockable/foldable parts.
- Special checks for blowers and electrical safety for systems > 50 V.
- Inspection procedures
- General inspection principles to assess condition, performance and environmental risk (leakage, dosing, distribution, cleaning capability).
- Test reporting
- Minimum content for test reports to document findings, non‑conformities and recommended corrective actions.
- Safety
- Minimum safety measures to protect the inspector/test operator during inspection activities.
- Regulatory linkage
- Annex ZA maps the standard to EU Directive 2009/128/EC (sustainable use of pesticides), providing a presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal.
Applications and Users
This standard is intended for practical field use and compliance activities:
- Who uses it
- Inspection bodies, service technicians, equipment manufacturers, regulatory authorities, farm managers and agricultural advisors.
- Practical applications
- Routine field inspections and maintenance planning.
- Compliance checks for environmental protection, safe filling/emptying and thorough cleaning.
- Verifying pump, nozzle, boom and distribution performance to ensure accurate dosing and reduce off‑target drift.
- Producing standardized test reports for audits and regulatory compliance.
