ISO 16283-1:2014 specifies procedures to determine the airborne sound insulation between two rooms in a building using sound pressure measurements. These procedures are intended for room volumes in the range from 10 m3 to 250 m3 in the frequency range from 50 Hz to 5 000 Hz. The test results can be used to quantify, assess and compare the airborne sound insulation in unfurnished or furnished rooms where the sound field may or may not approximate to a diffuse field. The measured airborne sound insulation is frequency-dependent and can be converted into a single number quantity to characterize the acoustic performance using the rating procedures in ISO 717‑1.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 16283-1:2014 (ISO 16283-1:2014) - "Acoustics - Field measurement of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements - Part 1: Airborne sound insulation" - specifies field procedures to determine airborne sound insulation between two rooms using sound pressure measurements. It applies to rooms with volumes from 10 m³ to 250 m³ and in the frequency range 50 Hz to 5 000 Hz. Results are frequency‑dependent and can be converted to a single-number rating per ISO 717-1.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Measurement scope: In situ determination of airborne sound insulation between adjacent rooms (unfurnished or furnished), including cases where the sound field may not be diffuse.
- Frequency and volume limits: Designed for 50 Hz–5 000 Hz and room volumes 10–250 m³.
- Instrumentation: Requirements for microphones, sound level meters, loudspeakers, calibration and verification of equipment before and during testing.
- Measurement procedures:
- Default and low-frequency procedures for sound pressure level measurement.
- Options for microphone handling: fixed positions, mechanized continuously‑moving microphone, or manually scanned microphone.
- Guidance on generation of sound field in the source room.
- Background noise: Methods for assessing and correcting measurements for background noise.
- Reverberation time: Measurement of reverberation time in the receiving room (default and low-frequency methods) as part of the calculation.
- Data processing: Conversion to octave bands, energy-averaging, and conversion of frequency-dependent results into single-number ratings (ISO 717‑1).
- Quality and reporting: Recording requirements, uncertainty estimation and detailed test-report contents. Annexes provide requirements for loudspeakers and example measurement layouts.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN ISO 16283-1:
- Acoustic consultants and field testing laboratories performing in-situ sound insulation tests.
- Building inspectors, architects and contractors verifying compliance with acoustic performance requirements.
- Manufacturers and façade/partition installers validating installed performance.
- Regulatory authorities and certification bodies assessing building conformity to acoustic standards.
Common uses:
- Verification of in-situ airborne sound insulation after construction or renovation.
- Troubleshooting airborne noise problems and comparing performance of partitions and junctions.
- Providing data for compliance with building regulations and for single-number ratings under ISO 717-1.
- Input to acoustic design decisions and product performance validation.
