This document specifies a method for the determination of nominal compressive strength of advanced monolithic technical ceramic materials at room temperature.
Abstract
EN ISO 17162:2025 - Overview
EN ISO 17162:2025 (adopted from ISO 17162:2014) specifies a standardized method for determining the nominal compressive strength of advanced monolithic technical ceramics (fine ceramics) at room temperature. Approved by CEN in November 2025 and to be implemented nationally by CEN members, this standard provides an industrially practical, reproducible test procedure for material development, quality control and component design data.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope and significance: Defines nominal compressive strength and explains factors affecting results (microstructure, surface finish, test-piece geometry, loading rate, ambient humidity and assembly misfit). Emphasizes statistical variability and refers to EN 843-5 for further statistical analysis.
- Test machine requirements: Machines must meet safety and accuracy criteria per ISO 7500-1 (grade 1), be capable of constant loading or displacement rates, continuously record applied force (including peak force) and include shatter protection.
- Test jig and platens:
- Compression platens must be axially aligned and have parallel loading surfaces within 0.01 mm per 10 mm, perpendicular to the load line.
- One platen should incorporate a calotte for self-alignment.
- Platens and loading blocks must have hardness and Young’s modulus ≥ 400 GPa (examples: silicon carbide or cemented carbide).
- Loading blocks: contact surface cross-section at least five times greater than the test-piece end faces; blocks should resist fracture and be used only once to avoid damage transfer.
- Compression platens must be checked and refinished/replaced if damaged.
- Test pieces and procedure: The standard places defined restrictions on shape, size, surface finish (see EN 623-4), number of specimens, measurement equipment (ISO 3611 reference) and the sequence of assembly and loading to minimize test-method errors.
- References and conformity: Normative references include ISO 7500-1, ISO/IEC 17025 and EN 623-4.
Applications and Users
- Who uses it: Materials scientists, R&D teams, ceramic manufacturers, testing laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025 accredited), quality engineers and component designers.
- Practical uses:
- Characterizing compressive strength for design of load-bearing ceramic components.
- Quality control and batch acceptance testing during manufacturing.
- Comparative material development and verification for high-temperature, corrosion-resistant, lightweight structural components where compressive loads dominate.
- The standard is presented as an industrial-feasible alternative to ASTM C 1424-04 for compression testing of brittle ceramics.
Related Standards
- ISO 7500-1 (machine verification), ISO/IEC 17025 (lab competence), ISO 3611 (measuring equipment), EN 623-4 (surface roughness), EN 843-5 (statistical analysis). ASTM C 1424-04 is cited for comparison.
