ISO 17304:2013 specifies a test method for the measurement of the polymerization shrinkage of external energy-activated polymer-based restorative materials such as composites and core materials.
Abstract
EN ISO 17304:2013 - Overview
EN ISO 17304:2013 (Dentistry - Polymerization shrinkage) defines a standardized laboratory method to measure the polymerization shrinkage of external energy‑activated, polymer‑based restorative materials (for example dental composites and core materials). The method uses density determination by the buoyancy (Archimedes’) principle to quantify volumetric change during polymerization, providing reproducible results for comparison between materials and batches. It applies to Class 2, Group 1 materials (see ISO 4049) and is not suitable for Class 1 self‑curing materials.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Density-based buoyancy method (immersion method) in accordance with ISO 1183‑1.
- Specimen handling: Pre‑test storage at (23 ± 2) °C for at least 30 minutes; unpolymerized measurements under yellow light to avoid premature curing.
- Environmental control: Measurements performed at room temperature (23 ± 2) °C; temperature fluctuation during measurement
