A standard on geothermal testing methods is necessary because of the rapidly growing market in Europe of heat exchangers installation. Geothermal heat exchangers are used for heating and cooling and may be used in warmer and cooler areas throughout Europe. The use of geothermal energy leads to a reduction of coal and oil and therefore also of CO2 emissions. The drilling, installation of geothermal heat exchangers and testing for geothermal conductivity has to be determined by a standardised testing procedure.

EN ISO 17628:2015 - Geotechnical investigation and testing - Geothermal testing - Determination of thermal conductivity of soil and rock using a borehole heat exchanger (ISO 17628:2015) specifies an in situ test method (Geothermal Response Test, GRT) for determining the thermal conductivity of soils and rock using a borehole heat exchanger (BHE). The standard covers installation and testing of vertical or inclined boreholes (examples given up to about 400 m length and diameters up to ~200 mm) using liquid heat transfer media that do not undergo phase change. EN ISO 17628:2015 is intended to provide reliable ground thermal parameters for the design of geothermal exchange systems and thermal storage.
