ISO 17632:2015 specifies requirements for classification of tubular cored electrodes with or without a gas shield for metal arc welding of non-alloy and fine grain steels in the as-welded condition or in the post-weld heat-treated condition with a minimum yield strength of up to 500 MPa or a minimum tensile strength of up to 570 MPa. One tubular cored electrode can be tested and classified with different shielding gases, if any. This International Standard is a combined specification providing classification utilizing a system based upon the yield strength and the average impact energy of 47 J of all-weld metal or utilizing a system based upon the tensile strength and the average impact energy of 27 J of all-weld metal. 1) Paragraphs and tables which carry the suffix letter "A" are applicable only to tubular cored electrodes classified to the system based upon the yield strength and the average impact energy of 47 J of all-weld metal in accordance with this International Standard. 2) Paragraphs and tables which carry the suffix letter "B" are applicable only to tubular cored electrodes classified to the system based upon the tensile strength and the average impact energy of 27 J of all-weld metal in accordance with this International Standard. 3) Paragraphs and tables which have neither the suffix letter "A" nor the suffix letter "B" are applicable to all tubular cored electrodes classified in accordance with this International Standard. It is recognized that the operating characteristics of tubular cored electrodes can be modified by the use of pulsed current, but for the purposes of this International Standard, pulsed current is not permitted for determining the electrode classification.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 17632:2015 - Welding consumables: Tubular cored electrodes provides a harmonized classification system for tubular cored electrodes used in gas‑shielded and non‑gas‑shielded metal arc welding of non‑alloy and fine grain steels. The standard covers electrodes for as‑welded or post‑weld heat‑treated conditions with a maximum yield strength up to 500 MPa or tensile strength up to 570 MPa. It allows a single electrode to be tested and classified with different shielding gases and explicitly states that pulsed current is not permitted when determining electrode classification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Two classification systems:
- System A (suffix “A”): based on yield strength and average impact energy 47 J of all‑weld metal.
- System B (suffix “B”): based on tensile strength and average impact energy 27 J of all‑weld metal.
- Tables/paragraphs with no suffix apply to all electrodes.
- Mechanical tests: procedures for multi‑run and single‑run test assemblies, preheat/interpass temperature guidance and post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions.
- Impact testing: specified average impact energy levels and designation of test temperatures.
- Chemical analysis: requirements and deposition method for all‑weld metal used in analysis.
- Symbols and designation: standardized symbols for product/process, tensile/yield properties, impact properties, chemical composition, electrode core/type, shielding gas, welding position and hydrogen content.
- Usability and core type descriptions: annexes describe electrode core types (system A) and usability characteristics (system B).
- Additional tests: fillet weld test, hydrogen measurement (ISO 3690), rounding and retest procedures.
Practical applications
- Selection and specification of tubular cored electrodes for fabrication, structural steel welding and repair where predictable weld metal properties are required.
- Use in procurement documents, quality control and supplier classification to ensure weld metal meets required mechanical and impact performance.
- Useful for welding engineers, materials engineers, procurement specialists and standards/compliance teams working with welding consumables.
Who should use this standard
- Welding engineers and fabricators specifying consumables for carbon and fine‑grain steels
- Manufacturers of tubular cored electrodes for product classification and labelling
- Inspection and QA personnel verifying weld consumable conformity
- Procurement and standards teams preparing technical purchasing specifications
