ISO 27654:2011 specifies the pressure test method to be applied to resistance-seam-welded specimens of different types of materials with single sheet thicknesses ranging from 0,3 mm to 3,2 mm. The purpose of this pressure test is to determine the suitability of the material, welding equipment, welding parameters and of other factors on a tank, a vessel or a container for liquids or gases, which are manufactured by resistance seam welding.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 17654:2011 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and adopted by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It specifies a pressure test method for evaluating resistance-seam-welded specimens. The standard applies to single sheet thicknesses ranging from 0.3 mm to 3.2 mm and is essential for assessing the integrity of welds in tanks, vessels, or containers designed to hold liquids or gases.
This destructive pressure test ensures the suitability of materials, welding equipment, and welding parameters used in resistance seam welding processes. EN ISO 17654:2011 supersedes the previous 2003 edition and is fundamental for quality control and compliance in manufacturing sectors relying on resistance welding techniques.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose The standard defines a pressure test for seam weld specimens to verify the strength and leak-tightness of welded joints, crucial for components under pressure such as tanks and containers.
-
Test Specimens Specimens must be prepared from the same materials and under similar conditions as actual production components, using identical welding equipment and parameters. Two specimen types are described:
- Type A: Specimen with four seams
- Type B: Specimen with one seam Dimensions and edge distances are regulated for test consistency.
-
Test Procedure The pressure test is conducted by applying compressed air or water to the welded specimen mounted in a restraining fixture that limits expansion during testing. Leakage detection is performed visually for bubble presence. Test pressure can be set at 0.15 MPa or pressure causing 20 mm deformation, depending on the product specification. Higher pressure tests require safety precautions, including performing the test in air with internal water pressure.
-
Test Reporting Comprehensive test reports must include:
- Standard reference
- Material properties and sheet thickness
- Welding process details and parameters
- Weld dimensions and test conditions
- Results and any deviations from the standard
Applications
EN ISO 17654:2011 is widely used in industries where pressure-retaining welded assemblies are critical, including:
- Manufacture of pressure vessels, tanks, and containers for liquids and gases
- Automotive and aerospace sectors, where resistance seam welding is common for structural components
- Pipeline and fluid handling systems, requiring leak-proof welded joints
- Industrial equipment fabrication where weld integrity ensures safety and longevity
By following this pressure test method, manufacturers can validate welding quality, reduce failure risks, certify product compliance, and maintain high safety standards.
Related Standards
To fully implement EN ISO 17654:2011, familiarity with related ISO standards is beneficial:
- ISO 14329 - Resistance welding destructive tests: failure types and geometric measurements for resistance spot, seam, and projection welds
- ISO 17677-1 - Resistance welding vocabulary: definitions related to spot, projection, and seam welding processes
Compliance with these standards helps ensure a comprehensive understanding of testing procedures, welding terminology, and quality evaluation criteria within resistance welding practices.
