This document details a classification of imperfections that can occur in brazing joints. In addition, guidance is provided on quality levels and suggested limits for imperfections are detailed. For requirements not covered by this document, reference can be made to other sources, such as statutory regulations, codes of practice and technical delivery conditions. No information is given on how imperfections are to be assessed in individual cases because this depends on the requirements for the particular brazed joint. These imperfections are not always detectable by the use of non-destructive testing alone. This document covers only imperfections that can occur in connection with brazing without the effect of any additional service loads. Only the type, shape and position of such imperfections are covered; no indication is given of the conditions of occurrence or causes. For requirements for brazed joints which are relevant and essential to the particular function of the component, reference can be made to the relevant documentation, for example manufacturing documents or procedure sheets. It is important that these requirements be precisely prescribed and that conformity with them be verifiable. Conformity can be established by testing either the brazed assembly itself or a test piece produced under comparable conditions. This document does not specify requirements for acceptance levels for imperfections, since these will differ very markedly depending on the application, but it does suggest some quality levels which can be of value in the absence of more detailed information.
Abstract
Overview - EN ISO 18279:2023 (Brazing - Imperfections in brazed joints)
EN ISO 18279:2023, adopted by CEN, provides a standardized classification and guidance for imperfections that can occur in brazed joints. The standard documents types, shapes and positions of imperfections, offers guidance on quality levels and suggests limits for imperfections, but does not prescribe acceptance criteria for specific applications. It supersedes the 2003 edition and includes updated quality-level guidance to reflect technical progress.
Key topics and requirements
- Classification of imperfections: Imperfections are grouped into six main categories - cracks; cavities; solid inclusions; bonding imperfections; shape and size imperfections; and miscellaneous imperfections - with further sub‑designations for internal and external defects.
- External vs internal imperfections: Examples include underfill, incomplete fillets, surface porosity, flux seepage (external) and gas entrapment, lack of fusion, solid inclusions (internal).
- Symbols and dimensions: Standard provides symbols and dimensional terms for describing planar imperfections and brazed overlap.
- Guidance (informative): Annex A offers practical guidance for evaluating imperfections; Annex B suggests quality levels and limits (useful when no project-specific criteria exist). The 2023 edition adds an additional quality level to reflect higher reliability needs.
- Limits of scope: Does not cover causes, conditions of occurrence, effects of service loads, or how to assess imperfections for a given application. It also notes limitations of non‑destructive testing (NDT) - not all imperfections are detectable by NDT alone.
- Conformity and verification: Where specific functional requirements exist, these must be precisely prescribed in manufacturing documents or procedure sheets; conformity can be verified by testing the assembly or a representative test piece.
Applications - who uses EN ISO 18279:2023
- Welding and brazing engineers specifying joint quality and inspection criteria.
- Quality inspectors and NDT personnel for defect classification and reporting.
- Manufacturers and fabricators of brazed assemblies (heat exchangers, fittings, HVAC components, precision assemblies) establishing acceptance documentation.
- Standards committees, procurement and certification bodies that need a common vocabulary for brazing imperfections.
- Useful when creating or updating manufacturing documents, procedure sheets and technical delivery conditions where brazed joint integrity is critical.
Related standards and references
- The document recommends consulting statutory regulations, codes of practice and technical delivery conditions for application‑specific acceptance criteria.
- Prepared by ISO/TC 44 (Welding and allied processes) in collaboration with CEN/TC 121; it is intended to be used alongside other brazing and welding standards and industry codes relevant to specific sectors.
