ISO 18756:2003 describes a test method that covers the determination of fracture toughness of monolithic ceramic materials at room temperature by the surface crack in flexure (SCF) method. This International Standard is intended for use with monolithic ceramics and whisker- or particulate-reinforced ceramics that are regarded as macroscopically homogeneous. It does not include continuous-fiber reinforced ceramic composites. The test method is applicable to materials with either flat or rising crack growth resistance curves.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 18756:2005 (ISO 18756:2003) specifies the surface crack in flexure (SCF) method for determining the fracture toughness of monolithic ceramics at room temperature. Intended for monolithic, whisker‑ or particulate‑reinforced ceramics that are macroscopically homogeneous, the method excludes continuous‑fiber ceramic composites. It is applicable to materials with flat or rising crack‑growth resistance (R‑curve) behavior and is commonly used for materials with fracture toughness up to ≈ 10 MPa·m½.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Create a small semi‑elliptical surface precrack by Knoop indentation, remove the indentation and residual stresses by polishing/grinding, then fracture the specimen in four‑point flexure. Measure the critical crack size and fracture load to calculate the SCF fracture toughness (KIsc).
- Specimen preparation: Controlled specimen size, edge chamfering, polishing and precrack introduction by Knoop indenter; number of specimens and geometry follow the standard’s validity requirements.
- Crack measurement & fractography: Post‑fracture fractography is required to locate and measure the precrack and any crack growth prior to final fracture.
- Calculations & corrections: KIsc is calculated from the measured crack dimensions and fracture load using specified stress‑intensity factor coefficients. The standard includes chamfer correction factors and polynomial functions for ellipticity and geometry factors.
- Environmental and R‑curve considerations: Annexes address environmental effects on slow crack growth, optional R‑curve estimation by varying indentation load, and precrack characterization procedures.
- Related normative references: The standard cross‑references test‑equipment verification and flexural strength methods (e.g., ISO 14704) and is part of a series of fracture toughness test methods (e.g., EN ISO 15732, CEN/TS 14425 series).
Applications
- Material development & R&D: Compare fracture toughness for new monolithic and particulate/whisker‑reinforced ceramics; generate K‑values versus crack size for R‑curve studies.
- Quality assurance & production control: Routine sampling to ensure consistent fracture toughness for components and batches.
- Design & reliability data: Provide input fracture toughness values for component design, finite‑element models, and failure analyses where surface flaws are critical.
- Material comparison & certification: Standardized method for interlaboratory comparisons and certification testing of advanced technical ceramics.
