This document specifies the safety requirements and measures for multi-blade rip sawing machines with manual loading or unloading or both, capable of continuous production use, hereinafter referred to also as “machines”, designed to cut solid wood and materials with similar physical characteristics to wood. This document deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in Annex A, relevant to the machines, when operated, adjusted and maintained as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. Transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping phases are also taken into account. This document does not deal with specific hazards related to the combination of single machines with any other machine as part of a line. This document is not applicable to machines: — intended for use in potentially explosive atmosphere; — manufactured prior to its publication.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 19085-13:2025 - Woodworking machines: Safety - Part 13 specifies safety requirements for multi-blade rip sawing machines with manual loading and/or unloading. Prepared by ISO/TC 39 and CEN/TC 142 and published in 2025, this standard applies to machines designed for continuous production cutting of solid wood and materials with similar physical characteristics. It covers hazards listed in Annex A and addresses operation, adjustment, maintenance, transport, assembly, dismantling and scrapping. The standard excludes machines intended for potentially explosive atmospheres, combinations of single machines in a line, and machines manufactured before publication.
Key topics
The standard sets out technical requirements and safety measures across control systems, mechanical protection and information elements. Major topics include:
- Safety and reliability of control systems - design of safe controls, start/stop functions, emergency stop, manual reset and failure-of-power handling.
- Control devices and mode selection - safe start, normal/operational/emergency stops, cleaning and powered-adjustment modes.
- Braking and tool run-down - braking functions for tools, run-down time limits and brake release safeguards.
- Tool and attachment safety - requirements for tool design, fixing devices, spindle locking and circular saw blade flanges.
- Protection against mechanical hazards - guarding strategies (fixed, interlocked), prevention of uncontrolled movements, and protection from ejected material.
- Ergonomics, maintenance and servicing - access to operating positions, isolation of energy sources, and cleaning of internal parts.
- Information, marking and documentation - warning labels, user instructions and conformity information (relation to Machinery Directive noted in Annex ZA).
(These topics reflect the clause structure and content headings in EN ISO 19085-13:2025.)
Applications - who uses this standard
EN ISO 19085-13:2025 is intended for:
- Machine manufacturers and designers to design compliant multi‑blade rip sawing machines.
- Safety and compliance engineers preparing risk assessments and CE documentation.
- Production managers and purchasers selecting safe woodworking equipment for factories and sawmills.
- Maintenance teams and training providers to define safe servicing, cleaning and adjustment procedures.
- Notified bodies and conformity assessors using the standard as a harmonized means to demonstrate conformity with the EU Machinery Directive (see Annex ZA).
Related standards
- EN ISO 19085 series (other parts addressing band saws, circular saws, panel saws, etc.)
- Relevant national and EU machinery safety legislation (Directive 2006/42/EC) - Annex ZA maps clauses to essential requirements.
By following EN ISO 19085-13:2025, stakeholders can reduce hazards in rip sawing operations, improve operator safety, and support regulatory compliance for woodworking machinery.
