This document specifies two methods for the determination of the specific heat capacity of ceramic matrix composites with continuous reinforcements (1D, 2D, 3D). Unidirectional (1D), bi-directional (2D) and tridirectional (XD, with 2 < X ≤ 3). The two methods are: — method A: drop calorimetry; — method B: differential scanning calorimetry. The two methods are applicable from ambient temperature up to a maximum temperature that is method dependent: method A can be used up to 3 000 K, while method B is limited to 1 900 K.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 19628:2024 (ISO 19628:2024) specifies standardized procedures for measuring the specific heat capacity of advanced ceramic matrix composites (fine ceramics) reinforced continuously in one, two or three directions. Endorsed by CEN and prepared by ISO/TC 206 in collaboration with CEN/TC 184, this standard covers two laboratory methods: method A - drop calorimetry (usable up to 3 000 K) and method B - differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) (usable up to 1 900 K). It applies to unidirectional (1D), bi‑directional (2D) and tridirectional (XD, 2 < X ≤ 3) ceramic composites.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Two validated methods
- Drop calorimetry (Method A): high‑temperature capability (up to 3 000 K), includes options for tests with or without containers and for conventional drop calorimetry (T1 > T2).
- Differential scanning calorimetry (Method B): supports stepwise and continuous heating approaches; method limitations to 1 900 K.
- Specimen and container guidance: requirements for test specimen preparation, container selection and thermometer specification to ensure reliable heat capacity results.
- Calibration procedures
- Electrical calibration and use of standard reference materials (SRMs) for in‑situ calibration of calorimeters and thermometers.
- For DSC, methods either use a known instrument constant (K factor) or an SRM for comparative calibration.
- Test procedures and calculations: detailed steps for measurement, data reduction and determination of mean and temperature‑dependent specific heat capacity values.
- Reporting: mandatory content for test reports to ensure traceability and repeatability (e.g., method used, calibration data, specimen orientation).
Applications and Users
- Who uses this standard: materials scientists, ceramic and composite engineers, quality assurance/testing laboratories, R&D teams in aerospace, defense, thermal management, energy and high‑temperature process industries.
- Practical applications
- Thermal modeling and design of high‑temperature components (turbine parts, thermal protection systems).
- Material selection and qualification for structural and functional ceramic composites.
- Research into thermophysical properties for simulation, lifecycle and safety assessments.
