This document specifies safety requirements for rowing equipment, in addition to the general safety requirements of ISO 20957-1:2013. This document is applicable to rowing type stationary training equipment, hereinafter referred to as rowing equipment, within the classes H, S and I and classes A, B and C regarding accuracy.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 20957-7:2024 (ISO 20957-7:2024) specifies additional safety requirements and test methods for stationary rowing equipment, supplementing the general requirements in ISO 20957-1:2013. It applies to rowing-type stationary training equipment within usage classes H, S and I and accuracy classes A, B and C. Published by CEN and endorsed across EU/EFTA members, this standard aligns with the EU standardisation mandate for stationary training equipment and supports conformity with Commission Decision (EU) No 476/2011 and Directive 2001/95/EC where cited.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & classification
- Defines usage classes (H, S, I) and accuracy classes (A, B, C) for power/readout accuracy and intended use.
- External construction & mechanical safety (clause 5.2)
- Addresses squeeze, shear and rotating points, transmission elements and accessible rotating parts.
- Temperature rise (clause 5.2.3 / 6.3)
- Requirements and test methods for temperature of accessible surfaces to reduce burn risk.
- Seats and seating systems (clause 5.2.4 / 6.2)
- Criteria and endurance tests for seat strength, retention and durability.
- Handles, ropes, belts and chains (clauses 5.4–5.5 / 6.1.6)
- Load tests and attachment integrity for handles, cables and drive components.
- Foot strap and foot support (clauses 5.6–5.7 / 6.5–6.6)
- Safety and testing of foot restraints and supports relevant to user restraint and escape.
- Intrinsic loading & endurance (clauses 5.3, 5.8 / 6.4, 6.7)
- Structural loading and endurance testing to ensure long-term mechanical integrity.
- Stability (clause 5.9 / 6.8)
- Tests to verify equipment remains stable under expected user interactions.
- Accuracy of power readouts (clause 6.9)
- Methods to verify power/ergometer output accuracy according to accuracy classes.
- Inspection and reporting
- Dimensional, visual and tactile checks, weighing tests and formal test reporting.
Applications
- Product design and development for rowing ergometers and indoor rowing machines.
- Manufacturing quality control and type-testing in accordance with safety and durability requirements.
- Certification and conformity assessment to support market access in Europe (presumption of conformity when cited).
- Procurement specifications for gyms, sports centres and institutional buyers requiring compliance with EN ISO 20957-7:2024.
Who should use this standard
- Equipment manufacturers, design engineers and R&D teams
- Test laboratories and third-party certification bodies
- Health & safety officers, facility managers and procurement specialists
- Regulatory authorities and compliance teams verifying conformity with EU safety directives
