Overview
EN ISO 22153:2021 (adoption of ISO 22153:2020) is the European standard that sets general requirements for electric actuators for industrial valves. Published by CEN, it covers basic design, classification, enclosure and corrosion protection, testing and conformity assessment for electric actuators used on on‑off and control valves. Combinations of electric actuators and gearboxes supplied by the actuator manufacturer are also within its scope. The standard explicitly excludes solenoid actuators, electro‑hydraulic actuators and electric actuators that are integral to the valve.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification & designation: Types, actuator duty classes and naming conventions to support correct specification and procurement.
- Action on loss of power: Requirements for stay‑put and fail‑safe behaviour.
- Design and endurance: Mechanical endurance expectations for part‑turn, multi‑turn and linear actuators.
- Environmental requirements: Ambient temperature, humidity, altitude, enclosure protection (IP rating), external corrosion protection and resistance to vibration, shock and seismic conditions.
- Attachment & mounting: Interfaces and mechanical attachments for part‑turn, multi‑turn and linear actuators.
- Performance and electrical: Power‑supply tolerances, duty performance, operating time/speed, cable entries and electrical connection requirements.
- Safety & control features: Self‑locking/braking, manual operation, travel limitation, torque/thrust limitation, end‑stop adjustment and noise limits.
- Optional equipment: Anti‑condensation heaters, position transmitters, running transmitters, local control stations, positioners/controllers, speed control, fieldbus interfaces, torque transmitters and data logging.
- Testing, marking & documentation: Type and production tests, production control, mandatory marking and required documentation for conformity assessment.
Applications and who uses it
- Actuator manufacturers and gearbox suppliers - to design, test and certify electric actuators that meet European/ISO requirements.
- Valve and OEM manufacturers - to ensure actuator‑valve compatibility and reliable integration.
- Plant engineers and specifiers in oil & gas, water/wastewater, power generation, chemical and process industries - to select actuators with the right duty class, environmental protection and fail‑safe behaviour.
- Procurement and compliance teams - to define contractual requirements, perform conformity assessment and verify marking and documentation.
- Testing and certification bodies - for type tests, production checks and verification against the standard.
