Overview
EN ISO 22459:2024 (ISO 22459:2024) specifies a standardized tensile-test method to determine the distribution of tensile strength and tensile strain to failure of ceramic filaments within a multifilament tow at ambient (room) temperature. The method applies to dry tows of continuous ceramic filaments that behave linearly elastic up to failure and are assumed to act freely and independently under loading. Results characterize filament-level variability within a tow and are distinct from strengths of embedded tows (see ISO 24046).
Key topics
- Scope and applicability
- Tests on dry, continuous ceramic filaments in multifilament tows at room temperature.
- Assumption: filaments act independently and show linear elastic behaviour up to failure.
- Test principle
- Tensile testing of a multifilament tow to generate a statistical distribution of filament rupture strain and strength.
- Specimen types and preparation
- Window-type and cylindrical-end specimen configurations are specified.
- Guidance on gauge length determination (including reference to 200 mm gauge length tests).
- Apparatus and data recording
- Requirements for tensile testing equipment and accurate data acquisition suitable for filament-level analysis.
- Test procedure and validity
- Gripping methods, strain-rate selection, and test acceptance criteria.
- Calculations and analysis
- Determination of load-train compliance, construction of envelope curves, instantaneous compliance, probability of filament rupture, and conversion to filament strength and rupture-strain distributions.
- Reporting of average and mean filament strengths and statistical distributions.
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing of ceramic filament tows used for reinforcing ceramic matrix composites (CMCs).
- R&D and materials characterization: assessing variability and reliability of advanced ceramic fibers.
