ISO 22827-2:2005 covers acceptance testing of equipment for 2D manipulation and also, to some extent, movements along the Z-axis. ISO 22827-2:2005 specifies two methods for the testing of the accuracy of the moving mechanism. The first method (type 1 test) provides a test method capable of classification of the moving mechanism rigorously according to the required accuracy. The second method (type 2 test) provides a simpler method for testing the moving mechanism by marking. The selection of the test method is optional. However, for large-size laser beam welding machines, such as a laser beam welding machine using 2D moving optics or an X-Y table, the type 2 test is applicable. ISO 22827-2:2005 is not applicable for welding cells with manual positioning of the welding head and/or the component, and for fixed-position welding without the moving mechanism.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 22827-2:2005 - "Acceptance tests for Nd:YAG laser beam welding machines - Machines with optical fibre delivery - Part 2: Moving mechanism" (CEN adoption) specifies acceptance and verification tests for the moving mechanism (2D manipulation and limited Z-axis motion) of Nd:YAG laser beam welding machines with optical-fibre delivery. It defines two optional test methods for assessing positioning accuracy, trajectory accuracy, and travelling-speed performance, and sets pass/fail criteria grouped into four accuracy classes (A–D). The standard is not applicable to manually positioned welding cells or fixed-position systems without moving mechanisms.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Acceptance testing for X–Y tables, 2D moving optics and similar moving mechanisms; also usable for verification after repairs or modifications.
- Two test methods
- Type 1 (rigorous classification) - full measurement method used to classify the moving mechanism into classes A (very high) through D (low). Tests include positioning repeatability/accuracy, dynamic trajectory accuracy and speed checks.
- Type 2 (simpler marking test) - marking-based checks suitable for large-format machines (e.g., 2D moving optics, X–Y tables). Verifies trajectory, straightness, squareness, positioning and speed.
- Positioning accuracy & repeatability (Table 1): example limits per class include unidirectional repeatability ±0.01 mm (class A/B), bidirectional accuracy up to ±0.4 mm (class D), and positioning accuracy expressed per metre (e.g., ±0.05 mm/m for class A).
- Travelling-speed accuracy (Table 2): classes set maximum/minimum/preferred speed tolerances - for example maximum travel speed accuracy ±2% (class A/B) up to ±10% (class D).
- Trajectory accuracy (Table 3): limits for geometric paths (rectangle overshoot/omission, circle roundness, 45° reversal) with tighter limits for higher classes (e.g., roundness 0.05 mm for class A).
- Test conditions: measurements at specified welding travelling speeds (tests at maximum/minimum), at least three measurements averaged, and for tables ≥1 m measure at 1 m intervals. Measurement methods reference ISO 230-2, ISO 15616-2 and ISO/TS 17477.
Applications and users
This standard is essential for:
- Laser welding machine manufacturers and OEMs validating moving-mechanism performance before delivery
- System integrators and industrial end-users performing acceptance tests or post-repair verification
- Quality assurance engineers and welding-procedure developers specifying machine class requirements
- Maintenance teams using the standard for periodic verification of positioning, trajectory and speed performance
