This document specifies general requirements and test methods for portable dental equipment for use in non-permanent healthcare environments. This document applies to portable dental units, portable patient chairs, portable operator’s stools, portable operating lights, portable suction source equipment, portable air compressors and other portable dental equipment in instances where these devices are designed and constructed to be transported for use in non-permanent healthcare environments. NOTE Particular requirements for specific types of portable dental equipment for use in non-permanent healthcare environments are specified in subsequent parts of this document. This document does not apply to stationary dental equipment, wearable equipment (e.g. headlamps and loupes), mobile dental equipment or portable dental equipment that is not intended to be used in non-permanent healthcare environments or not designed to be disassembled, folded or packed for human transport between non-permanent healthcare environments. Requirements for stationary dental equipment that can be installed in a dental mobile medical facility (e.g. vehicular or containerized mobile dental clinic) are not considered in this document.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 23402-1:2026, issued by CEN, defines the general requirements and test methods for portable dental equipment used in non-permanent healthcare environments. This standard sets out essential criteria for devices intended to be transported and operated outside permanent dental clinics, including temporary field clinics, outreach programs, and other non-traditional healthcare settings. Adhering to EN ISO 23402-1:2026 ensures portable dental units, patient chairs, operator stools, lights, suction equipment, air compressors, and related devices are safe, reliable, and suitable for versatile deployment where fixed installations are not feasible.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application
- Applies exclusively to portable dental equipment designed for disassembly, folding, or packaging for human transport.
- Does not cover stationary dental devices, mobile dental clinics (vehicular/shelter-based), wearable devices (headlamps, loupes), or equipment not intended for portable, non-permanent healthcare environments.
-
Classification
- Equipment is classified by electrical operation, intended use environment (indoor vs. outdoor), utility supply type (external vs. self-contained), and transport exposure (limited or rugged).
- Safety and performance depend on matching equipment design to its classification, particularly regarding exposure during transport and use.
-
General and Transport Requirements
- Specifies maximum modular weight and size for ease of manual transport.
- Requires design for ruggedness, including resistance to impact, drop, vibration, and ingress of dust or liquids (IP protection) per IEC 60529.
- Equipment must be simple to assemble/disassemble to ensure efficiency and safety during rapid deployment.
-
Operational and Safety Requirements
- Mandates usability engineering, cleaning and disinfection capability, and operational reliability under a wide range of environmental conditions.
- Addresses instruction durability and clarity, proper marking on both equipment and packaging, and conformance with referenced standards for medical electrical safety.
Applications
EN ISO 23402-1:2026 adds value by enabling:
- Military and Humanitarian Dental Care: Portable dental equipment is essential for providing urgent dental services in field hospitals, disaster response zones, and remote areas.
- Public Health and Outreach Clinics: Supports dental programs for schools, elderly homes, correctional facilities, and underserved communities.
- Home and Long-Term Care: Makes it feasible for clinicians to offer high-quality dental care at patient residences or within long-term care institutions.
- Academic and Research Activities: Facilitates off-site educational workshops and research programs requiring flexible, robust dental setups.
By following this standard, manufacturers, healthcare organizations, and procurement authorities can be confident that equipment will perform safely and effectively in dynamic, challenging environments.
Related Standards
EN ISO 23402-1:2026 references and is harmonized with several key international standards, including:
- IEC 60601-1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance of medical electrical equipment.
- IEC 60529: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP code).
- ISO 4180: Testing transport packages for performance.
- ISO 21530: Chemical resistance for dental equipment surfaces.
- IEC 62366-1: Usability engineering in medical devices.
- IEC 80601-2-60: Particular safety requirements for dental equipment.
- ISO 9687: Graphical symbols for dental equipment.
- ISO 15223-1: Symbols for information provided by manufacturers on medical devices.
These standards ensure a consistent, high-quality approach to safety, usability, and durability in portable dental equipment across different healthcare settings.
