This document specifies test methods for the determination of the breakdown voltage and withstand voltage of anodic oxidation coatings on aluminium and its alloys, on flat or near-flat surfaces and on round wire. The methods are applicable to anodic oxidation coatings used primarily as electrical insulators. The methods are not applicable to coatings in the vicinity of cut edges, the edges of holes, or sharp changes of angle on, for example, extruded shapes. NOTE 1 Breakdown voltage and withstand voltage are affected by relative humidity. NOTE 2 The methods described do not give satisfactory results for unsealed coatings because they are affected by the humidity in particular.

Overview
EN ISO 2376:2019 (CEN adoption of ISO 2376:2019) defines standardized test methods for measuring the breakdown voltage and withstand voltage of anodic oxidation (anodized) coatings on aluminium and its alloys. The methods apply to coatings on flat or near‑flat surfaces and round wire that are intended primarily as electrical insulators. This edition supersedes EN ISO 2376:2010 and adds a formal withstand voltage test and additional guidance on test specimens.

- Electrode probe: spherical contact face 3–8 mm diameter; probe exerts 0.5–1.0 N (typical mass 50–100 g).
- Contact plate/probe or clip for earthing and making contact to base metal; twisting machine for round‑wire tests.
- Specimen preparation
- Representative sampling from significant surfaces; avoid edges.
- Standard specimen size suggested 100 mm × 100 mm (alternatives by agreement).
- Clean with suitable organic solvent (e.g., ethanol); avoid solvents that leave protective films.
