This document specifies the application of the FMC/TFM technology for the ultrasonic testing of fusionwelded joints in metallic materials of minimum thickness 3.2 mm. It's is applicable only to components with welds fabricated using metals which lead to isotropic (constant properties in all directions) and homogeneous conditions. These classes of materials include welds in low carbon alloy steels and common aerospace grade aluminum and titanium alloys, provided they are homogeneous and isotropic.

EN ISO 23864:2021 (ISO 23864:2021) defines the application of automated FMC/TFM (full matrix capture / total focusing method) ultrasonic testing for the non‑destructive testing (NDT) of fusion‑welded joints in metallic materials. The standard covers automated TFM and related technologies for welds in homogeneous, isotropic metals (e.g., low‑carbon alloy steels and common aerospace‑grade aluminium and titanium alloys) with a minimum material thickness of 3.2 mm. It has been adopted by CEN as EN ISO 23864:2021.
