ISO 28927-11:2011 specifies a laboratory method for measuring hand-transmitted vibration emission at the handles of hand-held stone hammers. It is a type-test procedure for establishing the magnitude of vibration in the gripping areas of a stone hammer when operated in laboratory conditions. It is intended that the results be used to compare different models of the same type of machine. ISO 28927-11:2011 is applicable to engraving pens and stone hammers intended for use by stone masons, driven pneumatically or by other means. It is not applicable to demolition hammers or to chipping hammers primarily intended for use on metal or in construction.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 28927-11:2011 (ISO 28927-11:2011) specifies a laboratory type-test procedure for measuring hand-transmitted vibration emitted at the handles of hand-held stone hammers. The standard defines how to determine the magnitude of vibration in the gripping areas when stone hammers (and engraving pens for stone work) are operated under controlled laboratory conditions. It is intended for comparing different models of the same type of machine and is not applicable to demolition hammers or chipping hammers primarily for metal or construction use.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to stone hammers and engraving pens used by stone masons, driven pneumatically or by other means.
- Excludes demolition and metal-focused chipping hammers.
- Measurement focus
- Laboratory measurement of vibration emission at the handles (hand-transmitted vibration).
- Results used as type-test values for model comparison.
- Instrumentation and measurement principles
- Requirements for transducers, mounting, calibration and frequency-weighting filters (see instrumentation requirements).
- Measurement in multiple axes and at defined hand positions (standard updates emphasize three-axis measurement and defined transducer positions).
- Integration time, auxiliary equipment and uncertainty estimation are addressed.
- Testing conditions
- Defined operating and reference conditions, required description of attached equipment, workpiece and task.
- Operator specification and repeatability/validity of measurements.
- Reporting
- Model test report template and procedures for declaration/verification of vibration emission values.
- Annexes include a model test report and guidance on determination of uncertainty.
Practical applications
- Product design and development: engineers use the standard to quantify vibration levels during design iterations to reduce hand-transmitted vibration.
- Compliance and comparison: manufacturers declare vibration emission values for product literature and compare competing models objectively.
- Procurement and specification: buyers (workshop managers, stone masonry firms) use declared vibration data to select lower‑vibration tools, improving operator comfort and safety.
- Regulatory alignment: supports conformity assessment related to machinery directives (e.g., EU Directive 2006/42/EC) by providing standardized test methods.
Who should use this standard
- Tool manufacturers and test laboratories performing type tests on stone hammers and engraving pens.
- Product safety engineers, occupational hygienists and procurement professionals assessing hand-transmitted vibration.
- Standards bodies and conformity assessors referencing vibration emissions for machinery compliance.
Related standards
- Other parts of ISO 28927 series for different tool types (grinders, drills, needle scalers, etc.).
- Supersedes ISO 8662-14:1996 for stone-working tools; consult the ISO 28927 family for harmonized vibration test methods.
